The GlocalMe G4 Pro is a portable 4G LTE hotspot designed for travel. It creates a WiFi network that your phone, laptop and tablet can share, and it uses what GlocalMe calls CloudSIM technology instead of a physical SIM card. The brand says it covers more than 200 countries, and it has a 5-inch touchscreen.
How CloudSIM works
Instead of a SIM tied to one carrier, the device connects to local networks in the country where you are, with data plans bought through the GlocalMe app. GlocalMe says the G4 Pro picks the best available network automatically. In its example, if AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon all cover the same area and one has poor conditions, the hotspot selects the strongest. Actual coverage depends on the country, the carrier and where you are.
Plans and the SIM slot
GlocalMe says the service has no contract and works on a pay-as-you-go basis, with plans by the day, month, region or gigabyte. The device comes with 1.1GB of global data, which the title of the listing rounds to 1GB. A SIM slot is also available, so you can use data from your own card when you prefer. Check the rates and terms in the app for the countries you will visit.
WiFi and connected devices
The G4 Pro supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, which can reduce interference in crowded places such as airports. GlocalMe lists 4G speeds, traffic protection and blacklist management, and says up to 10 devices can share the connection. Real-world speeds depend on the network available and the number of devices connected.
Touchscreen and built-in apps
The 5.0-inch HD screen shows data usage, SIM management and connected devices. GlocalMe lists pre-installed apps for maps, translation and currency conversion, all useful on a trip.
Battery and power bank use
A 3900mAh battery is rated at up to 10 hours of connectivity, according to GlocalMe. The device can also work as a power bank to charge other gadgets, though doing so drains the battery faster. The hotspot weighs about 0.4 lb, so it fits easily in a bag or pocket.
Who it suits
It suits travellers and business users who visit several countries and want a shared connection without swapping SIM cards. It also suits groups, since several devices can connect at once. People who stay in one country may find a local carrier plan simpler.
What to check before you buy
- Destinations: confirm that the countries you plan to visit are supported and which plans exist there.
- Data needs: work out roughly how much data you use for maps, video calls and streaming.
- Compatibility: check that your devices connect over WiFi and support the bands.
- Battery: consider a charger or power bank for long days out.
- Local rules: check the rules on using a hotspot in the countries you visit.
- What's in the box: check the cable, charger and any included data.
