The TP-Link RE605X is a WiFi 6 range extender. It connects wirelessly to your existing router, repeats the signal, and reaches rooms where the router's own signal is weak. TP-Link rates it for coverage of up to 1,500 sq ft (about 140 square metres) and up to 30 devices.
What a range extender does
A router's WiFi weakens with distance and walls. The RE605X sits between the router and the weak area, picks up the signal and rebroadcasts it. TP-Link points out that extenders are designed to improve coverage, not to raise the speed your internet provider delivers, and in some cases a stronger signal can affect overall throughput. Placement matters: an extender typically works best about halfway between the router and the dead zone, where it still receives a good signal.
Speed class
The "AX1800" label combines the two bands: up to 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, which add up to roughly 1.8Gbps. These are theoretical maximums. Real speeds depend on the router, distance and obstacles. The 5 GHz band is typically faster over short distances, while 2.4 GHz travels farther through walls.
WiFi 6 features
WiFi 6 is designed to handle many devices at once, and TP-Link says it suits tasks like 4K streaming and cloud gaming. The extender has two high-gain antennas and a 2x2 MU-MIMO design. Two other features are listed: Adaptive Path Selection, which picks the fastest connection path to the router, and High Speed Mode, which uses both bands together.
Gigabit Ethernet port
The Ethernet port lets you connect a PC, smart TV or console by cable, which can be more stable than wireless for such devices. The port also enables Access Point mode: with an Ethernet cable from your wired network, the RE605X can create a new dual-band WiFi network.
OneMesh
Paired with a TP-Link OneMesh router, such as the Archer AX21 that TP-Link names, the extender shares one network name and password, so devices move between router and extender without switching networks. Check TP-Link's compatibility list for your router.
Setup
Setup uses the TP-Link Tether app on Android or iOS, and an intelligent signal indicator helps you find a good location. TP-Link says the extender is compatible with all WiFi-enabled routers and devices, including those that support the newer AX standard.
Size
The listed size is about 6.2 x 3.8 x 1.8 inches, and it weighs about 0.6 lb.
Who it suits
It suits homes with a weak spot in a bedroom, basement or garage, and anyone who wants a wired connection somewhere the router can't reach.
What to check before you buy
- Your router's signal: the extender needs a decent signal at its location.
- OneMesh: confirm your router supports OneMesh if you want one network name.
- Outlet access: check the position of the outlet and the room around it.
- Expectations: an extender improves coverage; it doesn't raise your internet plan's speed.
- Devices: WiFi 6 benefits need WiFi 6 devices.
