The Thermaltake Toughpower GT 850W is an ATX power supply for desktop PCs, built to the ATX 3.1 standard and offering 850W of output. It is fully modular, carries 80 PLUS Gold efficiency and includes a native connector for modern graphics cards. It is aimed at gaming and workstation builds. Its part number is PS-TPT-0850FNFAGU-3.

ATX 3.1 and the 12V-2x6 connector

ATX 3.1 is Intel's updated power supply specification. Thermaltake says this unit is fully compatible, and it provides a native 12V-2x6 (12+4 pin) PCIe connector rated at 450W for modern high-power graphics cards. A native connector means you can plug the card in with a single cable, rather than relying on adapters. The listing also gives four PCIe 6+2 pin connectors for older or lower-power cards.

80 PLUS Gold efficiency

Thermaltake says the unit meets 80 PLUS Gold at 115V input and provides up to 90% efficiency. A power supply converts mains electricity to the low voltages a PC uses, and some energy is lost as heat in the process. A higher efficiency level typically means less wasted energy and less heat for the same work.

Smart Zero Fan and cooling

Smart Zero Fan technology adjusts fan speed to the load. At low loads, such as web browsing or office work, the fan can slow down or stop, which keeps the PC quieter. A 120mm hydraulic bearing fan handles cooling. Hydraulic bearings are typically chosen for quiet running and a long service life. The listed operating temperature range is 0°C to 40°C.

Fully modular cables

Because the unit is fully modular, you connect only the cables you need. Thermaltake includes low-profile flat black cables, which are easier to route behind a motherboard tray and typically leave more room for airflow. The unit is 150mm wide, 86mm high and 140mm deep, the standard ATX footprint.

Single +12V rail and protections

The unit uses a high-amperage single +12V rail, which Thermaltake describes as reliable and stable power delivery for high-end builds. It lists active PFC, OVP, UVP, OCP, OPP, OTP and SCP protections (over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, over-power, over-temperature and short-circuit). Input is 100-240V at 50-60Hz, with a maximum input current of 10A. Listed safety approvals include CE, UKCA, TUV, cTUVus, FCC and others. A five-year warranty applies.

Who it suits

It suits builders putting together a mid- to high-end gaming or workstation PC, especially with a recent graphics card that uses the 12V-2x6 connector. It also suits anyone who wants a quieter machine at idle, or tidy cabling in a compact case.

What to check before you buy

  • Wattage: add up your CPU and graphics card requirements and compare them with the unit's 850W output, leaving some margin.
  • Connector: confirm your graphics card's power connector type and how many connectors it needs.
  • Case fit: check your case supports a standard ATX power supply of this depth, with room for cables.
  • Cables: use only the cables supplied with this unit, as modular cables are not interchangeable between models.
  • Installation: follow the manual, switch off and unplug the PC before opening it, and follow local electrical codes and regulations.
  • Warranty: read the five-year terms.
