The SZOOMSY SZ-VX20POE is a pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera for meeting rooms, classrooms and live streams. It can move and zoom by remote control, so one camera can cover a whole room, and it connects over USB 3.0, HDMI or a network cable that also carries power.

Picture quality and zoom

SZOOMSY says the camera uses a 1/2.8-inch CMOS sensor and outputs up to 4K at 30 frames per second. Thirty frames per second is the usual rate for meetings and presentations. The lens offers 20x optical zoom with a horizontal viewing angle of 58.7° at its widest. Optical zoom uses the lens itself, so detail holds up better than with digital zoom, which crops the image. SZOOMSY points to large conference halls and classroom boards as typical uses.

Pan, tilt and presets

The head turns 355° horizontally and 120° vertically. Up to 255 preset positions can be stored, and nine of them can be recalled with the infrared remote. Presets are handy in a room where you switch between the speaker, the whiteboard and the audience: save each view once and recall it with a button.

Three ways to connect

  • USB 3.0: plug and play as a webcam. SZOOMSY lists compatibility with Zoom, Skype, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Polycom, BlueJeans and GoToMeeting.
  • HDMI: for a capture card, a switcher or a display.
  • RJ45 network (PoE): Power over Ethernet means one cable can carry data and power, but it needs a PoE switch or injector.

Control protocols and streaming

For installers, the listing names VISCA, PELCO-D and UVC control, with RS232, RS485, network and USB control options. Network protocols include ONVIF, SRT, RTSP and RTMP, which are the usual ways to feed a streaming encoder or a recording system. If you only want a webcam, UVC over USB is all you need.

Auto tracking

SZOOMSY lists AI human detection and tracking, which can follow a person as they move. The brand notes that it must be switched on in the menu. Tracking of this kind usually works best with good lighting and a clear view of the presenter.

Who it suits

It suits meeting rooms, schools, churches and small studios that want remote-controlled framing from a single fixed camera. It is more than most people need for a desk webcam.

What to check before you buy

  • Mounting: the camera weighs about 4.4 lb (2 kg); check the mount, ceiling or wall option and the cable run.
  • Distance: confirm that the 58.7° view and 20x zoom suit the size of your room.
  • Power: a PoE switch is needed for network power; check what else is in the box.
  • Software: confirm your conferencing or streaming software accepts a USB or network camera.
  • Control: check whether you need RS232 or RS485 control, or the remote is enough.
  • Lighting: any camera needs a well-lit subject for a clean picture.
