The SZOOMSY SZ-VX10 is a PTZ camera, meaning it can pan, tilt and zoom, with HDMI and USB outputs. It is made for meeting rooms, classrooms, live streaming and church services, where one fixed webcam can't frame a room or follow a speaker. The camera has no microphone, so you will need separate audio.
What PTZ and 10x optical zoom mean
PTZ stands for pan, tilt and zoom: the camera head moves left and right, up and down, and zooms in and out under remote control. SZOOMSY gives the lens a 10x optical zoom with a 54.8° horizontal viewing angle at the wide end. Optical zoom changes the lens itself, so it keeps detail at distance, unlike digital zoom, which just crops the image. SZOOMSY says this lets you pick out facial expressions from across a room.
Video quality
The camera has a 1/2.8-inch CMOS sensor. Over USB it outputs 4K (3840 x 2160) at 30fps. Over HDMI it outputs 1080p at 30fps in H.264. SZOOMSY says 2D and 3D noise reduction and low-light auto-correction help keep the picture clean in dim rooms. As a general rule, small sensors need decent room lighting, so don't rely on the correction alone.
Connections and control
- USB 2.0: plug-and-play without a driver. SZOOMSY lists Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, Cisco WebEx, Microsoft Teams, GoToMeeting and BlueJeans, plus Polycom and Cisco systems, and Windows, Mac OS and Chrome OS.
- HDMI: connects to conference terminals, TVs, big screens and projectors.
- Infrared remote: pans, tilts, zooms and opens the on-screen menu. Preset positions let you jump to saved shots.
- Computer, joystick, RS485 or RS232: for wired control. The camera supports Sony VISCA and Pelco P/D protocols, which are commonly used by control software and hardware joysticks.
Mounting and what's in the box
It can sit on a table, attach to a monitor, mount on a wall or tripod, or hang upside down from a ceiling. The package includes a DC 12V power adapter, an IR remote, a manual, a USB 2.0 cable, and brackets and screws. The camera measures 6.0 x 6.0 x 5.4 inches (about 15 x 15 x 14 cm) and weighs 4.4 lb (about 2 kg).
SZOOMSY says it replies to installation and technical questions within 24 hours.
Who it suits
It suits small churches, schools, meeting rooms and home studios that want a moving camera with real optical zoom. It also suits those who already use VISCA-compatible controllers.
What to check before you buy
- Audio: it has no microphone, so plan a separate microphone or conference speaker.
- Output mode: 4K is over USB, while HDMI is 1080p. Check which your software or capture device uses.
- Distance: check the room, because the lens covers a wide angle but needs enough light.
- Cabling: USB 2.0 and HDMI cable runs have length limits, so measure them.
- Power: it needs a DC 12V supply near the mounting spot.
- Control: decide if the remote is enough or whether you need a joystick or software.
