The Seasonic CORE GX-650 (model CORE V2 GX-650, ATX3) is a 650W desktop PC power supply. It is 80 PLUS Gold certified, fully modular and built to the ATX 3 standard, and it includes a 16-pin PCIe Gen 5 cable (12V-2x6) for recent graphics cards. At 140 mm long, it fits into a wide range of cases.
What ATX 3 and 12V-2x6 mean
ATX 3 is a newer revision of the PC power supply standard. Among other things, it covers the higher short power spikes that modern graphics cards can produce. The 16-pin PCIe Gen 5 cable (12V-2x6) is the connector used by many recent high-power graphics cards, and it replaces several older 8-pin connectors with a single cable.
Seasonic's listing says the unit is compatible with NVIDIA RTX 40 and 50 series and AMD graphics cards. Check your own card's power requirements, because 650W will not suit every high-end card.
Reading the 650W figure
The wattage is the maximum continuous output. Most PCs draw well below it most of the time. Add up the peak consumption of your processor and graphics card, add the rest of the system, and leave headroom. Graphics card makers usually publish a recommended PSU wattage that helps with this.
80 PLUS Gold efficiency
80 PLUS Gold is a higher efficiency tier than Bronze or Silver. It typically means roughly 87 to 90% efficiency at typical loads. A more efficient supply wastes less energy as heat, which can mean less fan activity.
Fully modular cabling
With fully modular cabling, every cable detaches from the unit. You connect only what you need, which tends to give a tidier build with better airflow. This is especially helpful in small cases. The listing also mentions a cable-free connection design, gold-plated high-current terminals for the motherboard, CPU and PCIe, and PVC embossed cables.
Design and cooling
Seasonic lists:
- OptiSink design;
- a 120 mm Hydro Dynamic Bearing (HDB) fan;
- tight voltage regulation of ±3% on the 12V, 5V and 3.3V rails;
- DC-to-DC converter design;
- ample +12V output.
Tight voltage regulation means the output stays close to its target when the load changes. Fluid dynamic bearings in fans typically run quietly and last longer than plain sleeve bearings.
Size and warranty
Listed dimensions are about 5.5 x 5.9 x 3.4 in, with a weight of 3.4 lb. Seasonic backs it with a seven-year warranty.
Who it suits
It suits builders putting together a mainstream gaming or work PC, particularly one with a recent graphics card that uses the 12V-2x6 connector, and anyone who likes a tidy, modular build in a compact case.
What to check before you buy
- Total power: check your parts' peak draw against 650W.
- Graphics card connector: confirm which power connector your card uses and how many are required.
- Case fit: a 140 mm unit suits most ATX cases, but check your case's PSU space.
- Cable length: confirm the cables reach your components.
- Cable seating: push the 16-pin connector fully home, and follow the card and PSU manuals.
- Mains and codes: match your region's voltage and follow local electrical codes.
