The Reolink RLN8-410 is a network video recorder (NVR) that collects and stores video from up to eight Reolink PoE cameras. It is the hub of a wired camera system: cameras plug into it, and it records their footage to an internal drive. Here is what its specs mean and what it does and does not work with.
What an NVR does
An NVR is a small computer built to receive video streams from IP cameras over a network, save them to a hard drive and let you play them back. Unlike a camera with only a microSD card, a recorder keeps footage from several cameras in one place and can record around the clock.
Power and data over one cable
The unit uses PoE, or Power over Ethernet. A single Ethernet cable, up to 330 ft (about 100 m) according to Reolink, carries both power and data to each compatible camera, so there are no separate power adapters at the camera end. Reolink also says the recorder can run its own independent camera network using DHCP, so you can view cameras with or without internet access.
Compatibility: Reolink cameras only
The listing is clear that this recorder only works with Reolink IP cameras. It names Reolink PoE cameras from 4MP up to 16MP, including the Reolink Doorbell PoE, RLC-1224A, RLC-823S2, TrackMix PoE, Duo 3 PoE and several others. Up to eight cameras can be managed at once. Cameras from other brands are not supported.
Smart detection and recording
The recorder can bring in the human, vehicle and animal detection and playback from compatible Reolink cameras. Cameras with features such as optical zoom, auto-tracking, two-way talk or motion spotlights keep those features when they are connected.
The cameras can record with sound around the clock and send their recordings to the NVR. It supports up to eight cameras recording at once to the built-in 2TB drive. For more room, Reolink says an extra 8TB drive can be added through the eSATA port.
Apps and remote viewing
Reolink offers its app and client software for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac. Reolink states these have no monthly fees, and they provide local or remote access to your cameras.
Who it suits
It suits home or small-business owners building a wired system who value the stability of cabled cameras. It also suits anyone who already has Reolink PoE cameras and wants central, continuous recording.
What to check before you buy
- Camera brand: only Reolink IP cameras work with it.
- Cable runs: plan Ethernet routes to each camera, within the 330 ft limit.
- Camera count: it handles up to eight.

- Space and setup: it measures about 10.0 x 1.6 x 9.1 in (25 x 4 x 23 cm). Check the manual for ventilation and setup.
