The Reolink RLN16-410 is a network video recorder (NVR) for home or small-business camera systems. It records up to 16 Reolink cameras onto a built-in 4TB hard drive, and it powers PoE cameras over their network cables. It is designed to work with Reolink cameras only.
What an NVR does
An NVR is a dedicated box that receives video from IP cameras and stores it on a hard drive. It runs around the clock, so recording doesn't depend on a phone, a computer or cloud storage. Reolink says this unit records 24/7, with sound where the camera has a microphone, and works as an independent system with its DHCP function, so you can view cameras with or without the internet.
PoE: one cable for power and data
PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. A PoE camera is connected with a single Ethernet cable that carries both power and video, so you don't need a power adapter at each camera. Reolink lists cable runs of up to 330 feet (about 100 metres), the usual Ethernet limit. This keeps installation cleaner, particularly outdoors.
Cameras it works with
The listing says it works with Reolink PoE 4K, 5MP and 4MP cameras and with Reolink Wi-Fi cameras that use DC power, but not battery-powered ones. It names models such as the RLC-510A, 520A, 810A, 811A, 820A, 823A and 842A, the Duo 2 PoE, the PoE doorbell and the E1 Outdoor. It manages up to 16 cameras at once. It won't work with other brands' cameras.
Smart detection and apps
Reolink says the NVR integrates human and vehicle detection and playback from compatible cameras, so you can search recordings for specific events rather than scrubbing through hours of footage. Optical zoom, auto-tracking, two-way talk and spotlights depend on the camera you pair with it.
For viewing, Reolink offers an app for iOS and Android and a client for Windows and Mac, with local and remote access and no monthly charge.
Storage
The 4TB drive is pre-installed. Reolink says you can add a further 6TB drive for more storage. How many days of footage fit depends on how many cameras you run, their resolution and how much they record, so more cameras means fewer days.
Size
It measures about 13.0 x 11.2 x 1.8 inches and weighs 7.9 lb, so it sits on a shelf or in a cabinet near your router and switch.
Who it suits
It suits owners building or expanding a wired Reolink camera system, who want local recording and no reliance on the cloud.
What to check before you buy
- Camera compatibility: confirm each camera is a supported Reolink model.
- Cable route: plan Ethernet runs under the 330-foot limit.
- Location: put the NVR somewhere ventilated and out of sight, near your router.
- Storage: estimate how many days of recording you need.
- Privacy: check local rules about where cameras may point.
- Setup: follow the manual and check the camera count against the 16 channels.
