The Redragon RGPS-850W is an 850-watt internal power supply for desktop PCs. It is fully modular, certified 80 Plus Gold, and built to the ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 standards, so it can power current graphics cards through a 12VHPWR cable that is included in the box. It is aimed at gaming and workstation builds.
What 80 Plus Gold means
The 80 Plus programme certifies how efficiently a power supply converts mains power to the DC power a PC needs. Gold is a higher tier than Bronze or Silver, and it typically means at least about 87 to 90 per cent efficiency at typical loads. Less wasted energy means less heat, which usually allows quieter cooling. Redragon says this gives cooler case temperatures, higher efficiency and less noise.
ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1
ATX 3.1 is the current revision of the standard for PC power supplies, and PCIe 5.1 covers the power connection for modern graphics cards. Redragon says the unit handles power excursions of 200% in total and 300% for the GPU. Excursions are brief spikes above a card's rated power, which recent high-end cards can produce, and the standard asks power supplies to ride them out without shutting down.
The included 12VHPWR cable is the single connector used by many recent graphics cards. Redragon lists compatibility with Nvidia 4090, 4080, 4070 Ti and 50-series cards, and AMD GPUs. As always, check your own card's power requirement and recommended wattage.
Fully modular flat cables
Fully modular means every cable detaches, so you plug in only what the build needs. Redragon also says the flat cables reduce clutter and help airflow. That makes cable management easier in smaller cases. The listing also mentions dual CPU P8 (4+4) support for server motherboards.
Protection and internals
Redragon lists OVP, OCP, OPP, OTP, UVP and SCP protections, which stand for over-voltage, over-current, over-power, over-temperature, under-voltage and short-circuit protection. It describes an LLC resonant and DC-DC design, with 100% Japanese capacitors, and a universal 100-240V AC input.
Fan and lighting
The fan has a Zero RPM mode: Redragon says it only spins when the temperature reaches 60°C, so the unit is silent at light loads. The fan includes RGB lighting with nine modes and 26 colours.
Size
The body is a compact 160 mm long, which Redragon says fits a wider range of cases and leaves room behind the motherboard tray. The listed dimensions are about 11.8 x 7.9 x 4.7 in, and the weight is 5.7 lb (2.6 kg). Before you commit to a case, check its maximum power supply length.
Who it suits
It suits PC builders and upgraders who want a modular, 850W unit with the 12VHPWR connector for a current graphics card, particularly in a case with limited depth. It is more power than a basic office PC needs.
What to check before you buy
- Wattage: add up the draw of your processor and graphics card, and compare it with the card maker's recommendation.
- Connectors: confirm you have the PCIe, CPU and SATA connectors you need.
- Case fit: check the case supports a 160 mm power supply.
- GPU cable: check how your graphics card uses 12VHPWR, and route the cable without sharp bends, as the card's manual advises.
- Mains supply: make sure the plug and voltage suit your region.
- Fan and lighting: check whether you want RGB lighting.
