The NETGEAR WAX202 is a dual-band WiFi 6 device rated at AX1800 speeds. NETGEAR positions it for a home office, a home-based business or a college student's room. It connects to an existing cable modem and takes over the job of the WiFi router, sharing the connection with phones, laptops, consoles and streaming players.

What AX1800 and WiFi 6 mean

AX1800 is a combined figure: it adds the maximum theoretical speeds of the two bands, with NETGEAR giving up to 1.8 Gbps in total. No single device will reach that figure, since each connects on one band at a time and real speeds depend on distance, walls and interference. WiFi 6 (802.11ax) is the generation that improves how a router handles many devices at once, and it is generally more efficient than WiFi 5 when several phones, laptops and smart devices are active together.

The four-stream, dual-band design means it offers both the 2.4 GHz band, which travels further through walls, and the 5 GHz band, which is typically faster at shorter range.

Coverage and device count

NETGEAR says it covers up to 1,200 sq. ft. (about 110 square metres) and supports up to 40 devices. Treat coverage as a guide for open layouts. Dense walls, multiple floors and large metal appliances reduce range, and a larger home may need extra access points.

Wired connections

Three 1G Ethernet ports let you plug in computers, game consoles or streaming players directly. Wired connections are usually steadier than WiFi for gaming and video calls. If you need more wired devices, an Ethernet switch can add ports.

Internet compatibility

The listing says it works with any internet service provider up to 1 Gbps, including cable, satellite, fiber and DSL. It connects to your existing cable modem, so it does not replace the modem if your provider uses one.

The description also calls the unit a WiFi 6 dual-band wireless access point, so check the manual for how it is intended to be set up, as access point and router roles are configured differently.

Setup and management

NETGEAR says setup takes minutes through a built-in web browser interface, with no registration required. You can manage WiFi settings, test your internet speed and monitor data use. The description mentions the ability to keep a home network separate from a work network. A three-year hardware warranty is listed.

Size

The listing gives dimensions of 6.7 x 2.5 x 9.5 inches (about 17 x 6 x 24 cm) and a weight of 3.0 lb (roughly 1.4 kg).

What to check before you buy

  • Internet speed. The device is rated for plans up to 1 Gbps; confirm yours falls within that.
  • Modem. You need a cable modem or other connection source already in place.
  • Home size and layout. Compare your floor area and walls with the 1,200 sq. ft. figure.
  • Device count. Check the number of connected devices against the 40-device limit.
  • Wired needs. There are three Ethernet ports; add a switch if you need more.
  • Role. Confirm in the manual whether you will use it as a router or as an access point.
