The Linksys WRT1900ACS is a dual-band Wi-Fi router with four detachable external antennas, four Gigabit Ethernet ports and a dual-core processor. It is known for being "open source ready", meaning advanced users can install alternative firmware and customise how it works, while everyone else can use Linksys's own Smart Wi-Fi software.

What AC1900 means

The AC1900 label is a combined figure. The router runs two bands at once: up to 600 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and up to 1300 Mbps on 5 GHz, according to Linksys. Those numbers are theoretical maxima under ideal conditions. In general, the 5 GHz band is faster over short distances and less crowded, while 2.4 GHz travels further through walls. Devices pick the band that suits them, and your actual speeds depend on the device, distance and interference.

The router uses Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac). Linksys states it is up to 4.3 times faster than N technology, which was the previous generation. Newer Wi-Fi standards exist, so check what your devices support.

Antennas and processor

Four external, adjustable antennas are intended to improve signal strength in multi-storey homes and small offices. Adjustable antennas let you angle them: pointing some upright and some sideways is a common way to cover different floors.

Inside, Linksys lists a dual-core 1.6 GHz ARM-based processor and 512MB of memory. A stronger processor helps the router manage many connections and extra features at the same time, which Linksys says supports gaming, streaming and file transfers by several people at once.

Ports and shared storage

There are four Gigabit Ethernet ports for wired devices. A USB 3.0 port and a combined eSATA/USB 2.0 port let you attach external storage and share files across the network. USB 3.0 is typically much faster than USB 2.0, and eSATA is meant for external SATA drives.

Control and customisation

Linksys's Smart Wi-Fi software includes device and website prioritisation, parental controls, activity monitoring, Wi-Fi on and off scheduling, password-protected guest networks and a Network Map that shows what is connected. For advanced users, the open-source readiness opens the way to custom firmware. Flashing third-party firmware is the owner's responsibility, so read the project's instructions first.

Size and power

It measures about 9.8 x 7.7 x 2.0 inches (roughly 25 x 19.5 x 5 cm), excluding antennas, and weighs 1.8 lb (about 0.8 kg). The power supply accepts 100-240V, and the stated operating temperature is 32 to 104°F (0 to 40°C).

What's in the box

The listing says the package includes the router, four dual-band detachable antennas, a Quick Start Guide, a CD with documentation, an Ethernet cable, a power adapter and a power cord.

Who it suits

It suits households and small offices that want a capable Wi-Fi 5 router with wired ports and USB or eSATA storage sharing, as well as tinkerers who value the open-source option. People who want the latest Wi-Fi standard or a mesh system should check those needs against this model.

What to check before you buy

  • Internet connection: the router needs a modem, so confirm what your provider supplies.
  • Device support: check whether your devices use Wi-Fi 5 or newer.
  • Coverage: think about the size and layout of your home, since walls reduce range.
  • Storage: note the drive formats and connections you intend to use.
  • Firmware: keep the firmware updated, and read the guidance before installing third-party firmware.
  • Placement: put it in an open, central position.
