The Lenovo ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2 (model 40AS0090US) is a docking station that turns one USB-C cable into a full desk setup: monitors, wired network, USB accessories and laptop charging. It is aimed at ThinkPad users who move between a desk and a bag and want to reconnect in a single step.
One cable for the desk
Lenovo describes the dock as a one-cable universal solution. You plug the USB-C cable into the laptop, and the dock carries video, data, network and power. The package includes the dock, a 90W AC power adapter, a power cord and a USB-C cable. The dock measures about 3.0 x 6.2 x 8.3 inches (7.6 x 15.7 x 21 cm) and weighs about 1 lb (0.45 kg).
Ports
According to Lenovo, the ports are:
- 3 x USB 3.1
- 2 x USB 2.0
- 1 x combo audio jack
- 1 x Gigabit Ethernet
- 1 x HDMI
- 2 x DisplayPort
Lenovo says data can move at up to 10 Gbps. Keeping some USB 2.0 ports is practical, because keyboards, mice and older peripherals don't need more, and they leave the faster ports for storage.
Monitors and what limits them
The dock supports up to three external monitors. Lenovo states it can handle DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 for a maximum of one 4K display at 60 Hz, and gives dual 4K at 30 Hz or triple 1080p as other options. It also stresses that the real video output depends on the laptop's own output. In other words, the dock sets an upper limit, but the laptop's graphics and USB-C port decide what you actually get. A 4K picture at 30 Hz is fine for documents but can look less smooth when moving a mouse or scrolling quickly, which is why the 60 Hz figure matters.
Management features for IT teams
Lenovo lists PXE Boot and Wake-on-LAN from sleep, hibernate and power-off states, plus MAC address pass-through, meaning the laptop's own network address is presented through the dock. These are mostly useful in managed office networks, where devices are identified by address or booted remotely.
Compatibility
The listing names specific Lenovo machine types, including ThinkPad T490 (20N2, 20N3, 20Q9, 20QH), T590 (20N4, 20N5), X280 (20KE, 20KF), T480 (20L5, 20L6), X1 Carbon 6th generation (20KH, 20KG), X270 (20HM, 20HN, 20K5, 20K6) and T480s (20L7, 20L8). Lenovo also refers readers to the description for complete compatibility information. Other laptops with USB-C may work for some functions, but the supported list is the reliable guide.
Who it suits
It suits ThinkPad owners with a permanent desk who want to connect displays, wired Ethernet and peripherals in one move. A shared desk in a hybrid office is a typical case.
What to check before you buy
- Your exact laptop model: compare your machine type with the list above.
- Display plan: work out how many monitors you want, at what resolution and refresh rate, and what your laptop can output.
- Cable types: check your monitors' inputs (HDMI or DisplayPort) and whether you need extra cables.
- Charging power: the included adapter is 90W, so confirm your laptop's power needs.
- Desk space: the dock stands upright, so allow room for it and its cables.
- Network setup: if you rely on PXE Boot or MAC pass-through, confirm settings with your IT team.
The short version
- One USB-C cable for video, data, network and charging, with a 90W adapter included.
- 3 x USB 3.1, 2 x USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, 2 x DisplayPort and an audio jack.
- Up to three monitors; one 4K at 60 Hz at most, depending on the laptop.
- Listed compatible with specific ThinkPad machine types.
