The Anker 565 (model A8388) is an 11-in-1 USB-C hub. It plugs into one USB-C port on a laptop and adds video outputs, USB ports, Ethernet, memory card slots and a power input. It's meant for laptops with only a few ports, particularly when used with two external displays.
The eleven ports
Anker lists these ports:
- one 10 Gbps USB-C data port,
- one 10 Gbps USB-A data port,
- two 480 Mbps USB-A data ports,
- a 4K HDMI port,
- a 4K DisplayPort,
- a USB-C Power Delivery input port (listed as 100W),
- an Ethernet port,
- an AUX port,
- an SD card slot and a microSD slot.
The 10 Gbps ports are quick enough for external SSDs and large file transfers, while the 480 Mbps ports are better for keyboards, mice and similar devices. Anker lists card-reader speeds of up to 104 MB/s.
Two monitors and what to know about resolution
You can connect one display to HDMI and another to DisplayPort. Anker says each can run at up to 2K at 60Hz if your laptop has DisplayPort 1.4, or 1080p at 60Hz with DisplayPort 1.2. On macOS the two screens show identical content (mirrored), as Anker notes. The hub outputs video only through HDMI and DisplayPort, not through its USB-C ports.
Pass-through charging
The hub supports up to 85W pass-through charging, so one cable from the laptop can carry power and data at the same time. You need to supply a suitable USB-C charger, as one isn't included. Check that its wattage matches your laptop, because some of the power is used by the hub.
Compatibility
Anker says the hub works with USB-C, USB4 and Thunderbolt connections, and with MacBooks (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. It says the hub is not compatible with Linux. A laptop's USB-C port must support video output for the displays to work, so check yours.
Size and what's included
The hub is about 5.4 x 2.2 x 0.6 inches and weighs 0.3 lb (about 140 g), so it fits in a laptop bag. The package includes the hub, a welcome guide and an 18-month warranty, according to the listing.
Who it suits
It suits people who use a laptop at a desk with two monitors, a wired network and several USB devices, and who want to connect everything with one cable. It also suits photographers who regularly read SD cards. If you need three or more screens, or different content on both screens on a Mac, check its limits first.
What to check before you buy
- Video support: confirm that your laptop's USB-C port can output video.
- Monitor inputs: check that your displays have HDMI or DisplayPort, and have the right cables.
- Charger: make sure you have a suitable USB-C power adapter for pass-through charging.
- Operating system: the hub is listed as not compatible with Linux.
- Mac displays: two screens will mirror each other on macOS.
- Heat and placement: hubs can warm up during heavy use, so allow airflow.
