The Intel Core i9-9900K is a 9th Gen desktop processor with eight cores and 16 threads. It's an unlocked chip for the LGA1151 socket, and Intel positions it for gaming, content creation and productivity. It's mainly of interest to people building or upgrading a PC around a 300-series motherboard.

Cores, threads and clock speeds

The i9-9900K has 8 cores and 16 threads. Threads come from Intel's Hyper-Threading, which lets each core handle two streams of work, and that typically helps with tasks that use many threads, such as video encoding, rendering and running several programs at once. The base clock is 3.60GHz, and with Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 it can reach up to 5.00GHz. Turbo speeds depend on load, temperature and power limits, so the top figure is not sustained on every core all the time.

It has 16MB of cache, a small, fast memory pool on the chip that reduces how often the processor has to wait for main memory.

What "unlocked" means

The "K" in the name marks a processor with an unlocked multiplier, which lets enthusiasts overclock it, provided the motherboard supports it. Overclocking raises heat and power draw, and it generally requires a motherboard with a suitable chipset and good cooling. If you'd rather leave settings alone, it runs at its stock speeds.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

Intel lists it as compatible only with motherboards based on Intel 300 Series chipsets, and it uses the LGA1151 socket. The socket's name alone isn't enough, because older 100 and 200 series boards use a similar socket but are not listed as compatible. Check the motherboard maker's CPU support list, and note that some boards need a BIOS update before they recognize this chip.

Integrated graphics

The processor includes Intel UHD Graphics 630. That lets a system drive a display without a separate graphics card, which is handy for office use, media playback or as a fallback. Gamers and creators who need more graphics performance would typically pair the CPU with a dedicated graphics card.

Optane memory support

Intel lists Intel Optane Memory support. Optane Memory was a caching technology intended to speed up a system's storage. Check the motherboard's documentation if this matters to you.

Power and cooling

The listing gives 95W. Intel notes that a thermal solution is not included in the box, so you'll need to buy a separate CPU cooler. For an unlocked, eight-core chip that boosts to 5.0GHz, a capable cooler is generally a good idea, and cooler and case choice affect how long it can hold higher speeds.

Who it suits

It suits builders with a compatible 300-series board who want a high-core-count chip for gaming, streaming, editing and multitasking, and those upgrading within the LGA1151 platform. People starting a new build should note that this is an older generation and will pair only with the matching platform.

What to check before you buy

  • Motherboard: confirm that it has an Intel 300 Series chipset and supports the i9-9900K, including any BIOS requirement.
  • Cooler: buy a compatible cooler, since none is included.
  • Memory: check which memory type and speeds your motherboard supports.
  • Power supply and board: make sure both can handle a 95W part, especially if you plan to overclock.
  • Graphics: decide whether the integrated graphics will do or whether you need a separate card.

The short version

  • An unlocked 9th Gen desktop processor with 8 cores and 16 threads.
  • 3.60GHz base clock, up to 5.00GHz turbo and 16MB of cache.
  • Works only with Intel 300 Series chipset motherboards (LGA1151).
  • Includes Intel UHD Graphics 630 and supports Intel Optane Memory.
  • No cooler in the box.
