The Intel Core i7-9700K is a 9th Generation desktop processor with eight cores, an unlocked multiplier and a 95W power draw. It is a chip for LGA1151 motherboards, and Intel positions it for gaming, creating and general productivity. It is sold as a processor only, so you need to supply your own cooler.
Cores, threads and clock speed
The i7-9700K has 8 cores and 8 threads. Each core handles one thread, so there is no Hyper-Threading on this model. The base frequency is 3.60GHz, and Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 raises that to as much as 4.90GHz when there is thermal and power room. A 12MB cache gives the processor fast memory close to the cores. In general, more cores help with tasks that split into many parts, such as video encoding, while higher clock speeds help with lightly threaded work such as many games.
Unlocked
The "K" at the end of the name means the multiplier is unlocked, so the chip can be overclocked on a motherboard that allows it. Overclocking raises heat and power use, and it needs a good cooler and a suitable board. It's optional, and the processor runs at its stock speeds without it.
Socket and chipset compatibility
Intel says this processor is compatible only with motherboards based on Intel 300 Series chipsets, and uses the LGA1151 socket. The listing is clear that an older 100 or 200 Series board will not work, even though the socket looks similar. Some boards may also need a BIOS update first, so check the motherboard maker's compatibility list.
Memory
The processor supports up to 64GB of DDR4 memory at 2666MHz in a dual-channel arrangement, with a maximum memory bandwidth of 41GB/s. It does not support ECC memory. You can run faster memory on many boards, but check the board's own memory list.
Integrated graphics and Optane
Intel UHD Graphics 630 is built into the chip, so the processor can drive a display without a separate graphics card, which is handy for troubleshooting or basic use. The processor also supports Intel Optane Memory, a caching technology for speeding up drives.
Cooling is not included
The box has no cooling device. Intel states the processor is sold without a thermal solution, so you need a compatible LGA1151 cooler. At 95W, choose a cooler designed for that level of heat or higher.
Who it suits
It suits builders upgrading within an existing LGA1151 300 Series system, or putting together a new machine on that platform.
What to check before you buy
- Motherboard: confirm it is an Intel 300 Series board with LGA1151, and note whether it needs a BIOS update.
- Cooler: buy a compatible one, since none is included.
- Memory: check the board supports DDR4 at your chosen speed.
- Power: confirm the board and power supply can handle a 95W processor, particularly if you plan to overclock.
- Graphics: decide whether you will use the integrated graphics or add a graphics card.
