The Intel Core i7-860 is a quad-core desktop processor running at 2.80 GHz, sold in a retail box as model BX80605I7860. It is an older-generation chip that uses the LGA1156 socket, so it is mainly of interest to people maintaining, repairing or rebuilding an existing system of that era. Here is what its specifications mean and what to confirm before choosing it.
Four cores and Hyper-Threading
Intel describes the Core i7-860 as the midrange member of its original Core i7 family. It has four physical cores, each running at a base speed of 2.80 GHz. More cores let a computer work on several tasks at once, which helps with multitasking and with software written to spread its work across cores, such as video encoders and photo editors.
Hyper-Threading Technology lets each core handle two streams of instructions, so the operating system typically sees eight logical processors. Intel says this makes more efficient use of the processor's resources in highly threaded software. The gain varies by program, and it is usually smaller than the gain from adding real cores.
Turbo Boost and Enhanced SpeedStep
Turbo Boost Technology lets the processor run faster than its base speed when it is operating below its power and thermal limits. Intel states the boost as up to 133 MHz at a time for this model. Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology works in the other direction: it lowers clock speed and voltage when the computer is idle, which typically reduces power use and heat during light work.
Cache and memory controller
The processor has 8 MB of Intel Smart Cache, a pool of fast memory on the chip shared by all four cores. Cache keeps frequently used data close to the cores so they wait less on main memory. Intel also points to an integrated memory controller, which means the processor talks to system RAM directly rather than through a separate chip on the motherboard. This is generally associated with higher memory bandwidth and lower delay.
64-bit and virtualization support
The feature list includes Intel EM64T, which allows 64-bit operating systems and more than 4 GB of memory, and Intel Virtualization Technology, which helps virtual-machine software run guest systems more efficiently. Virtualization features usually also need to be switched on in the motherboard's firmware settings.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The listing names the LGA1156 socket. That matters more than any other detail here: the processor only fits motherboards with that socket, and not every board will recognise it without a suitable firmware version. The manufacturer's description also mentions a chipset name for compatibility, but LGA1156 is the identifier to match. Always check the exact motherboard model on its maker's CPU support list.
Who it suits
This processor suits someone upgrading or repairing an existing LGA1156 desktop, building a retro or hobby machine, or keeping a legacy system running for light office, media or general use. It is not a drop-in upgrade for modern motherboards, and it lacks the newer instruction sets and efficiency features of recent processors.
What to check before you buy
- Socket and board: confirm the motherboard is LGA1156 and that its firmware supports the i7-860.
- Cooling: a retail-boxed processor of this type may or may not include a cooler. Check what's in the box and that the cooler you plan to use fits the socket.
- Memory: check which RAM type and speeds your board supports, since the memory controller is part of the processor.
- Power and heat: make sure the power supply and case airflow suit a desktop quad-core chip.
- Graphics: the listing doesn't mention built-in graphics, so plan on a separate graphics card unless your setup already has one.
The short version
- A quad-core, 2.80 GHz desktop processor, model BX80605I7860, with 8 MB of cache.
- Hyper-Threading, Turbo Boost, Enhanced SpeedStep, EM64T and Virtualization Technology.
- Fits LGA1156 motherboards only.
- Best matched to upgrades, repairs and older-system builds.
- Verify motherboard support, cooling and memory before buying.
