The Inateck BCST-73 is a handheld barcode scanner that reads both 1D (traditional striped) and 2D (QR and similar) codes, on paper or on a screen. It connects to computers, tablets and phones in three ways, and it is built for counters, stockrooms, offices and home inventories where typing codes by hand would be slow.
1D and 2D codes
A 1D scanner reads the familiar vertical lines on product packaging. A 2D scanner uses an imager, like a tiny camera, so it can also read QR codes, Data Matrix and other patterns, and codes shown on a phone screen. Inateck says the BCST-73 supports GS1 barcodes, the standard used on most retail products, and that it can read codes on stained or damaged paper. Damaged codes are never guaranteed to scan, but imagers are generally more forgiving than older laser types.
Three ways to connect
- Bluetooth 5.0: pairs with phones, tablets and computers that support it.
- 2.4GHz wireless adapter: a plug-and-play USB adapter, useful for a computer that has no Bluetooth or a point-of-sale desk where you want a simple, fixed link.
- Wired: a cable connection for when you prefer not to depend on batteries or wireless.
Scanners like this typically act as a keyboard: each scanned code is typed into whatever field is selected, so most software needs no special driver. Check the manual for operating-system support and settings.
Battery life
The scanner has a 2600mAh battery. Inateck says it works for 11 to 12 hours of intensive use and calls that three times longer than regular scanners. That comparison is the brand's own, and real endurance depends on how often you scan and on your connection mode. Plan to charge it at the end of a shift.
Built to be dropped
The body has 360° TPU protection, which Inateck says is twice as thick as on similar products. The brand says it can resist a fall from 2 metres. A scanner on a busy work floor will be dropped sooner or later, so protection is worth a look, though a drop onto a hard surface can still damage the window.
Inventory mode, time stamp and vibration
Three extra functions are listed. Inventory mode can hold up to 270,000 barcodes, so you can scan without a connection and upload later, which suits stocktakes in places with weak signal. Time stamp outputs the scan result with time information. Vibration reminder mode gives a physical alert, helpful in noisy places.
Size
It measures 3.6 x 2.7 x 6.4 inches and weighs 0.4 lb (about 180 g), so it is comfortable in one hand for long periods.
Who it suits
It suits small businesses, warehouse and stockroom staff, libraries, offices and sellers who track stock. It is less suited to heavy industrial use that needs long-range scanning.
What to check before you buy
- Codes you scan: confirm the types you need, such as QR, Data Matrix or GS1 codes.
- Device compatibility: check that your operating system and software accept keyboard-style input.
- Connection: decide whether you need Bluetooth, the 2.4GHz adapter or a cable.
- Range: wireless range varies with obstacles and the environment.
- Working day: compare the 11-12 hour figure with your shift length.
- What's in the box: check the manual for the cable and adapter.
