The Inateck BCST-36 is a handheld wireless barcode scanner that reads both 1D (line) and 2D (QR-style) codes. It is aimed at small shops, warehouses, libraries and anyone who needs to enter product or inventory data quickly. This page explains what its specs mean and what to check before using one.

What a 2D scanner can read

A basic laser scanner reads only the traditional lines of a 1D barcode. A 2D imager takes a picture of the code, so it can also read QR codes and other matrix codes. Inateck says the BCST-36's 300,000-pixel module reads most 1D and 2D codes quickly, in strong light or low light, and can handle damaged, dirty, wrinkled or distorted ones. It also lists support for special formats such as GS1-128, 2 of 5, La Poste Code 128, USPS and FedEx.

Three ways to connect

The scanner supports Bluetooth, 2.4G wireless and wired connections. Inateck lists compatibility with Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Range depends on the mode:

  • 2.4G: up to 100 metres in an open environment, using a receiver.
  • Bluetooth: up to 40 metres in an open environment.
  • Wired: through the USB cable.

Open-environment range is measured without obstacles, so walls, shelving and metal typically shorten it.

Battery and charging base

The scanner has a 2600 mAh battery, and Inateck says its battery algorithm keeps power use low. The smart charging base does two jobs: it charges the scanner, and when connected to a computer by the included USB cable it passes barcode data through. Resting the scanner on its base between jobs is a simple way to keep it ready.

Scan modes and alerts

Light, sound and vibration notifications confirm a successful read, which helps in noisy places. Three scanning modes are listed:

  • Manual scan: you press a trigger for each code.
  • Continuous scan: it keeps scanning without a trigger press.
  • Auto-sensing: it scans when it detects a code.

Inventory mode

In inventory mode, the scanner can hold up to 270,000 barcodes, each up to 13 characters long, according to Inateck. That lets you scan stock away from a computer and upload the list later, which suits a warehouse aisle or a library shelf where a connection may be weak.

App, AI and SDK

Inateck says the scanner works with its AI features, an app and an SDK. In general, an app is used to change scanner settings such as prefixes, suffixes and key output, while an SDK lets a developer connect the scanner to custom software. Check which features you need before relying on them.

Size

The scanner measures about 3.6 x 2.7 x 6.5 inches (roughly 9 x 7 x 16.5 cm) and weighs 0.7 lb (about 320 g).

What to check before you buy

  • Your software: confirm the program you use accepts keyboard-style input from a scanner, and that it works with your device and operating system.
  • Code types: make sure the formats you scan, such as shipping labels or QR codes, are on the supported list.
  • Range and environment: distances are for open spaces; test in your own building.
  • Settings: decide whether you need the app or SDK, and whether you'll set prefixes or suffixes.
  • Charging routine: think about where the base will sit and which computer port powers it.

The short version

  • A wireless 2D barcode scanner for 1D and 2D codes, model BCST-36-BK.
  • Bluetooth, 2.4G and wired modes; up to 100 m on 2.4G and 40 m on Bluetooth in open space.
  • 2600 mAh battery and a charging base that also passes data over USB.
  • Manual, continuous and auto-sensing modes; inventory mode holds up to 270,000 codes.
  • About 0.7 lb, with light, sound and vibration feedback.
