The HP USB-C Dock G5 is a docking station for laptops. It lets you connect a laptop to monitors, a wired network, USB accessories and power through a single USB-C cable, which makes a desk setup quick to join and quick to leave.

What a USB-C dock does

A dock like this takes the one USB-C connection on your laptop and splits it into many. Instead of plugging in a display cable, an Ethernet cable, a keyboard receiver and a charger one at a time, you attach one cable and everything is connected. The G5 also supplies power back to the laptop through that same cable, so it can charge while you work.

Ports on the dock

HP lists the following connections:

  • 2 video outputs: one DisplayPort and one HDMI (the listing gives two DisplayPort and HDMI display connections)
  • 1 Gigabit Ethernet port
  • 1 powered USB 3.0 port and 1 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port
  • 1 USB-C port
  • 1 audio port
  • 1 USB-C power port for the connection to the laptop

Having several video outputs is useful for a two-monitor setup. Check how many displays your own laptop can drive at once, because that limit depends on the laptop's graphics, not only on the dock.

Power delivery

The dock comes with a 100-watt power adapter. A dock can pass power to the laptop only up to what its adapter and the laptop's charging design allow, so a thin ultrabook that wants 65W is typically well covered, while a laptop that needs more than the dock supplies may charge slowly under load.

Which laptops it is listed for

HP names these models as compatible: Elite x2 G4; EliteBook 735 G6, 745 G6, 830 G6 and 850 G6; EliteBook x360 1040 G6; mobile thin client mt45; and ProBook 445R G6, 640 G5 and 650 G5. USB-C docks often work with other laptops too, but HP's list is the confirmed set.

Size and weight

The dock measures about 4.8 x 4.8 x 1.8 inches (12 x 12 x 4.5 cm) and weighs about 1.5 lb (roughly 680 g). That is small enough to sit beside a monitor or go in a bag between home and the office.

Who it suits

It suits people who move a laptop between a desk and meetings, shared-desk offices, and anyone who wants wired Ethernet and two screens without a tangle of cables. IT teams standardizing on HP business laptops are an obvious fit given the compatibility list.

What to check before you buy

  • Your laptop model: compare it with HP's compatibility list above.
  • Display limits: confirm how many external monitors your laptop supports and at what resolution.
  • Monitor inputs: check that your screens take DisplayPort or HDMI, and whether you need cables or adapters.
  • Charging: compare your laptop charger's wattage with the dock's 100W adapter.
  • Firmware and drivers: docks often need current drivers or firmware for stable operation.
  • Model number: the listing shows slightly different model codes for the regional version, so confirm the exact one you need.

The short version

  • A USB-C docking station from HP that connects a laptop with one cable.
  • Two video outputs (DisplayPort and HDMI), Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0 ports and an audio port.
  • 100W power adapter supplies charging through the dock.
  • Listed for specific EliteBook, Elite x2, ProBook and mt45 models.
  • About 4.8 x 4.8 x 1.8 inches and 1.5 lb.
