The HP USB-C/A Universal Dock G2 is a compact docking station that links a laptop to monitors, USB accessories and a wired network through a single cable. It is designed for desks that serve more than one kind of notebook, since it works with both USB-C and older USB-A laptops, from HP and from other makers.

Ports at a glance

HP lists the following connections:

  • 1 USB-C port with data and 15W power out
  • 1 attached USB-C cable (1 metre) to the laptop
  • 4 USB 3.0 charging ports (the listing names two pairs)
  • 1 combo audio jack
  • 2 DisplayPort ports
  • 1 HDMI 2.0 port
  • 1 RJ45 Ethernet port
  • 1 standard lock slot

That mix covers a keyboard, mouse, headset, external drive, wired network and two displays without plugging each in separately.

How the displays work

The dock is driven by DisplayLink technology, which sends video over USB rather than through a dedicated video link. HP says it supports two monitors plus the laptop's own screen. The description also cites up to three 4K displays, but only on Thunderbolt or USB-C notebooks that carry video. With the included USB-A adapter, a USB-A laptop can use the dock for accessories and up to two 4K displays.

Because DisplayLink needs software, HP notes that drivers must be downloaded from its support site or through Windows updates. That is worth planning for on locked-down work machines. DisplayLink is generally fine for office work and video calls; fast-moving content and demanding graphics are typically better served by a dock that uses a direct video link.

One cable for power and data

On a USB-C laptop, the single cable carries data and charges the notebook, so the desk setup is a one-plug job when you sit down. For older machines that use a barrel-style charger, HP mentions an optional 4.5mm and USB-C Dock Adapter G25 for legacy charging. It is sold separately.

Management features

The dock supports network functions aimed at IT teams: PXE boot, LAN/WLAN switching, wake-on-LAN and MAC address pass-through in all power states. In plain terms, these let a managed fleet be deployed, updated and tracked over the wired connection as if the laptop's own port were in use.

Size

The dock measures 4.80 x 4.80 x 1.77 inches (122 x 122 x 45 mm) and weighs 1.53 lb (0.695 kg). HP describes it as taking up only about 5 x 5 inches of desk space.

What to check before you buy

  • Laptop ports. Confirm whether your laptop has USB-C with video or only USB-A; the number of 4K screens depends on it.
  • Operating system and drivers. DisplayLink drivers are required, so check that your system allows installing them.
  • Monitor inputs. Make sure your displays have DisplayPort or HDMI inputs, or have the right adapters.
  • Charging needs. Check how much power your laptop expects and whether the dock's charging suits it; the listing does not give a total wattage.
  • Cable reach. The attached cable is 1 metre, which limits where the dock can sit.
  • Box contents. The listing mentions a USB-A adapter; confirm what else is included.

The short version

  • A DisplayLink USB-C/A dock for HP and non-HP notebooks.
  • Two monitors plus the laptop screen, with HDMI 2.0 and two DisplayPort outputs.
  • USB 3.0 ports, a USB-C port, Ethernet and a combo audio jack.
  • Needs DisplayLink drivers from HP's support site or Windows updates.
  • Includes manageability features for company-run laptop fleets.
