The HAPPRUN KC7 is a compact smart projector with streaming apps built in, a native 1080p picture and the ability to decode 4K video. It's made for turning a wall, a screen or even a ceiling into a big picture without a large TV, in a bedroom, a living room or the backyard. Here's what its specs mean in practice.
Native 1080p and 4K decoding: the difference
A projector's native resolution is the number of pixels its imaging chip actually shows. On the KC7 that's 1080p, or 1920 x 1080 pixels.
"4K decoding" describes the input side: the projector can accept and play a 4K signal from a file or a streaming device, then scales it to its native 1080p for display. That's convenient, because you don't need to change the output settings on your sources. The picture on the wall, though, has 1080p detail, not 4K detail.
Brightness and picture size
HAPPRUN rates the KC7 at 1,500 ANSI lumens. ANSI lumens are measured across several points of the image under a standard method, which makes them more meaningful than an unqualified "lumens" figure.
Brightness and picture size are linked. The same light spread over a bigger image looks dimmer, and room light washes out contrast and colour on any projector. HAPPRUN says the KC7 gives a clear picture even with some light in the room, but you'll get the most from a large image in a dim or dark space.
The image can reach up to 300 inches, and a 50% zoom function adjusts its size without moving the projector. On most compact projectors, zoom of this kind is digital: it shrinks the picture by using fewer of the native pixels, so it's handy for fine-tuning rather than for large changes.
Stand, keystone and focus
A built-in adjustable stand tilts the projector to aim at a wall, a screen or the ceiling, with no tripod needed. Auto keystone correction squares up the image when the projector is angled, and focus is set by hand. For ceiling projection, HAPPRUN notes that both focus and keystone need adjusting manually.
Keystone correction is typically done digitally, so placing the projector square to the screen, where you can, gives the sharpest result. It can also sit on a table or go on a tripod, a wall mount or a ceiling mount.
Streaming, sound and connections
Popular streaming apps, including Netflix, are built in, so you can stream without a separate stick or box. Wi-Fi 6 handles wireless streaming. HDMI, USB and a 3.5 mm headphone jack take TV sticks, game consoles, laptops and phones.
Sound comes from two 10 W speakers with Dolby Audio support. Bluetooth 5.2 connects an external speaker for a bigger sound, or headphones for private listening without disturbing anyone else.
Size and where it suits
The KC7 measures about 6.9 x 6.4 x 7.2 inches (17.5 x 16.3 x 18.3 cm) and weighs about 4.6 lb (2.1 kg), so it fits in a bag. It suits bedrooms, living rooms and backyard film nights, and HAPPRUN also lists basements, camping tents and RVs. It isn't described as weather-resistant, so outdoors, keep it dry and bring it in afterwards.
What to check before you buy
- Resolution: 4K sources play, but they're shown at the native 1080p.
- Room and distance: how dark the room gets, and how far from the wall the projector must sit for the picture size you want. The manual gives the throw distance.
- Placement: whether you'll use the stand, a tripod or a mount, and that ceiling use means adjusting focus and keystone by hand.
- Apps: that the streaming services you use are available, and that you have your own accounts for them.
- Power and sound: no built-in battery is mentioned, so plan for an outlet outdoors, and a Bluetooth speaker if you want more volume.
