The GMKtec NucBox M5 Plus is a compact desktop computer that measures about 5.1 x 5.0 x 1.9 inches (13 x 12.7 x 4.8 cm). It packs an eight-core AMD Ryzen 7 processor, 16GB of memory and a 512GB solid-state drive into a case that fits behind a monitor or on a shelf. It is aimed at office work, light gaming and small network roles.

What the Ryzen 7 5825U brings

The M5 Plus uses the AMD Ryzen 7 5825U, an eight-core, 16-thread chip based on the Zen 2+ design (as GMKtec describes it) that boosts to 4.30GHz. The "U" suffix means it is a low-power laptop-class processor. That is what makes a small, quiet case possible, though it also means sustained performance depends on how well the chassis can shed heat. GMKtec says it offers about 30% more performance than the Ryzen 5 5600U, 5560U and 5500U chips.

For everyday tasks such as browsing, documents, video calls and spreadsheets, a chip of this class typically has plenty of headroom. It comes with Windows 11 Pro preinstalled.

Memory and storage, and how far they expand

The listing gives 16GB of DDR4 in dual-channel (two 8GB modules). Dual-channel memory typically gives better bandwidth than a single module, which helps the integrated graphics in particular. GMKtec says the memory can be expanded to 64GB.

Storage is a 512GB M.2 2280 SSD on PCIe 3.0. That interface is fast enough for quick boots and file loads, even if newer PCIe generations are faster still. GMKtec states that the dual-slot design supports up to 4TB of SSD storage. The brand notes that the upgrades are not included, so extra memory and drives would be separate purchases.

Graphics and triple-screen output

Graphics come from AMD Radeon Vega integrated graphics with eight cores at 1900MHz. Integrated graphics like this can handle 4K video playback, photo editing and mid-range or older games at modest settings. They are not a replacement for a dedicated graphics card in demanding modern titles.

GMKtec says the machine can drive three displays at once. The ports include one HDMI 2.0 (4K at 60Hz), one DisplayPort and one USB-C port that supports power delivery, DisplayPort output and data.

Networking: dual 2.5G LAN and WiFi 6E

Two 2.5-gigabit RJ45 Ethernet ports are the unusual feature at this size. GMKtec says they suit uses such as Untangle or pfSense firewalls, or a small office server. Two network ports let one connect to the internet and the other to a local network, which is the basic layout of a software router. For wireless, there is WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.

Other ports listed are two USB 3.2, two USB 2.0 and a 3.5mm audio jack for headset and microphone, plus a DC power input.

Who it suits

This kind of mini PC suits people who want a tidy desk, an office machine that does not take up room, or a home-lab box for network experiments. It also suits anyone building a multi-monitor workstation without a large tower.

What to check before you buy

  • Display connections: confirm your monitors use HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C, and that you have the right cables.
  • Upgrades: extra RAM and SSDs are not included; check the module type and size the listing describes.
  • Gaming expectations: integrated graphics suit lighter games; check the titles you play.
  • Networking needs: if you plan a router role, make sure you are comfortable setting up that software.
  • Warranty: GMKtec states a 1-year limited warranty; read its terms.
  • What's in the box: check the contents list for the power adapter and any cables.
