The GMKtec NucBox G5 is a very small desktop computer built around an Intel N97 processor. It comes with Windows 11 Pro installed, 12GB of DDR5 memory and a 512GB SSD, and it is designed for office work, study, media playback and light everyday tasks. Here is what its specifications mean.
The Intel N97 processor
The N97 is a 12th-generation Intel "Alder Lake-N" chip with four cores and four threads, 6MB of cache and a boost clock of up to 3.6GHz. GMKtec lists a 12W TDP, which describes the heat the chip is designed to produce and indicates low power use. The brand says it performs up to 40% higher than the older N100, N95, N5105 and N5095 chips, and that the integrated Intel UHD Graphics (24 EUs, 1.20GHz) also improves on earlier N-series parts.
Chips of this class typically handle web browsing, documents, video calls and streaming comfortably. They are not designed for heavy video editing or demanding 3D games. The processor supports Quick Sync and AV1 decoding, which help with smooth video playback.
Memory and storage
The configuration is 12GB of DDR5 RAM and a 512GB SSD. The SSD makes starting up and opening programs far quicker than a hard drive would. For office use and browsing with several tabs, 12GB is generally comfortable. Check the manual to see whether the memory or storage can be upgraded.
Two screens at 4K
There are two HDMI ports, so two displays can be connected at once. GMKtec rates the output at 4096 x 2160 at 60Hz. A two-screen setup is useful for keeping documents on one monitor and a video call on the other. It can also drive a projector or a television.
Ports and connectivity
The listing counts:
- 3 x USB 3.2
- 2 x HDMI
- 1 x Gigabit Ethernet
- 1 x 3.5mm audio
- 1 x Micro SD card slot
- 1 x Type-C power input
That gives enough room for a keyboard, mouse, storage and a wired network connection, though anyone with many accessories may want a USB hub.
Size and cooling
The body measures 2.8 x 1.7 x 2.8 inches, small enough to sit behind a monitor. GMKtec says the cooling fan is practically silent at light loads and stays fairly quiet under load. Noise depends on the task and the room.
BIOS options and in the box
According to GMKtec, the BIOS offers settings such as Auto Power On and Wake on LAN, which suit a machine that runs unattended. The package contains the mini PC, a power adapter and a user manual. GMKtec provides a 1-year limited warranty covering design and workmanship defects.
Who it suits
It suits home offices, classrooms, reception desks, media centres and anyone who wants a small second computer. It is less suited to heavy creative work or modern demanding games.
What to check before you buy
- Your workload: confirm that a four-core, low-power chip covers the software you use.
- Displays: check that your monitors accept HDMI, and the resolution and refresh rate you want.
- Peripherals: count the USB devices you need, and whether Wi-Fi or Ethernet will do.
- Mounting: the listing doesn't mention a mounting bracket, so check for one if you want it behind a monitor.
- Upgrades: look at the manual for memory and storage options.
