The GMKtec M3 is a compact desktop computer built around Intel's Core i5-12450H processor. It is meant for people who want a full Windows-class machine for the desk, the living room or a small office without a large tower taking up space. It comes with 16GB of memory and a 1TB solid-state drive already fitted, so it is aimed at being usable straight from the box.
What the processor offers
The Core i5-12450H is a 12th-generation Intel chip with eight cores and twelve threads, a 12MB cache and a 45W TDP (power envelope). GMKtec lists a turbo speed of up to 4.4GHz. Chips of this class are laptop-derived, which is why they fit in a small case: they deliver more multitasking headroom than the low-power processors found in many tiny PCs. GMKtec compares it to an older Core i7-10810U and says single-core performance is about 31% higher and multi-core about 48% higher.
Graphics come from the processor itself (Intel UHD Graphics). That is plenty for browsing, office software, video playback and light photo work, but integrated graphics typically won't match a dedicated graphics card in demanding games or heavy 3D rendering.
Memory and storage
The M3 ships with 16GB of DDR4 in two 8GB modules, which lets the memory run in dual-channel mode and typically improves bandwidth. GMKtec says memory can be expanded to 64GB, though extra modules are not included. Storage is a 1TB PCIe 3.0 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD, with expansion to 2TB listed. NVMe drives load programs and files far faster than older SATA drives or hard disks.
Ports and connections
Port count matters on a small machine, and this is where the M3 is generous:
- Two HDMI 2.0 outputs, each rated for 4K at 60Hz, so two monitors can be driven.
- Three USB 3.2 ports and one USB 2.0 port.
- One Type-C port for power and data.
- A 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port and an audio in/out jack.
Wireless is covered by WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. WiFi 6 generally brings better handling of many connected devices; real speeds depend on your router and the room. GMKtec says the Ethernet controller works with Linux, Ubuntu and ESXi, which matters if you plan to use the machine as a small home server.
Size and mounting
The listing gives the body as about 4.48 x 4.17 x 1.67 inches (roughly 11.4 x 10.6 x 4.2 cm). GMKtec includes a VESA bracket so the PC can be fixed to the back of a monitor or to a wall, keeping the desk clear.
Who it suits
It suits home offices, students, shared family computers, media-centre setups and anyone who wants a quiet, small footprint. It is also a sensible fit for people who want a low-profile always-on machine for files or light server duties. It is less suited to users who need a powerful graphics card.
What to check before you buy
- Operating system: confirm what is pre-installed and whether you need to supply your own licence or drivers.
- Displays: check that your monitors have HDMI inputs, or that you have the right adapters.
- Upgrades: if you plan to add memory or a second drive, check the manual for how the case opens and which slots are free.
- Peripherals: the box is a computer only; keyboard, mouse and monitor are separate.
- Warranty: GMKtec states a one-year limited warranty; read its terms.
- Cooling and placement: leave airflow around the case, especially if it is mounted behind a monitor.
The short version
- Small desktop with an 8-core, 12-thread Core i5-12450H and integrated Intel graphics.
- 16GB DDR4 (2 x 8GB) and a 1TB NVMe SSD, both expandable according to GMKtec.
- Two 4K/60Hz HDMI ports, four USB-A ports, USB-C, 2.5G Ethernet, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.
- About 4.5 inches wide, with a VESA mount for hiding it behind a monitor.
- Best for office, media and light server use rather than demanding gaming.
