fanxiang PS3000 1TB USB4 Portable SSD: features, specs and who it suits

The fanxiang PS3000 (model PS3000-1T) is a 1TB portable solid state drive that connects over USB4 through a Type-C port. It is made for people who move large files often, such as video editors, photographers and gamers, and fanxiang also positions it as external storage for recording video on the iPhone 15 Pro.

What USB4 speeds mean

fanxiang rates the drive at up to 3800MB/s for reading and 3700MB/s for writing. For comparison, many ordinary portable SSDs on USB 3.2 top out at roughly 1000MB/s or a little more, and a hard drive is usually well below that. At the rated read speed, a file of more than 3GB could in theory transfer in about a second.

Those are best-case figures. The listing notes that the device you plug it into needs to support USB4. On a USB 3.2 or USB 3.0 port, the drive still works, as fanxiang says it is compatible with Thunderbolt 3/4, USB 3.2 and USB 3.0 and below, but speeds will be limited by the port. Real-world speed also depends on the cable, the file sizes and how full the drive is.

Video recording on iPhone 15 Pro

fanxiang says the drive suits the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max for external recording of 4K 60fps video, including ProRes. Recording ProRes video produces very large files, so a fast external drive is the usual way to keep it going for more than a short clip. Check Apple's own guidance on supported drives and formats for your phone.

Build and heat

The drive has a heat-dissipating alloy body. Fast SSDs get warm under sustained transfers, and a metal case helps draw that heat away, which in general helps the drive hold its speed. fanxiang describes the design as resistant to pressure and drops, and says a custom silicone protective case adds another layer of protection. No portable drive is indestructible, and backing up important data is still sensible.

Compatibility

The listing says the PS3000 works with laptops, desktops, TVs, PS5, PS4 (Pro) and Xbox Series consoles, plus Macs on version 10.9 or later, Windows 7 or later and selected Android devices with OTG functionality. Console and TV support can depend on the device's own rules about external storage, so check the manufacturer's documentation.

Size, weight and warranty

It measures 115 x 62 x 15 mm and weighs 160 g, which is small enough for a pocket or camera bag. fanxiang states a 5-year guarantee or 700TBW (terabytes written) as its endurance figure. TBW is the total amount of data that can be written to the drive over its life, and 700TBW is a very large amount for typical personal use. The drive uses TLC flash memory.

Who it suits

It suits creators who handle large video or photo files, people who want to expand the storage of a supported iPhone or laptop, and gamers who keep libraries on an external drive. If you only need to carry documents or occasional backups, a slower drive will do the job.

What to check before you buy

• Port: confirm your computer or phone has a USB4 or Thunderbolt port if you want the top speeds.
• Cable: use a cable rated for the speed, ideally the one supplied.
• Format: check that the file system suits your devices, and that the drive can be formatted for them.
• Console and TV use: check the manufacturer's rules on external drives.
• Capacity: 1TB fills quickly with 4K video.
• Backups: keep a second copy of anything important.
