The fanxiang PS2000W 2TB is a portable external solid state drive with a USB-C connection and twice the space of the 1TB model. It suits people who carry large libraries of video, photos or games and want them in something that fits in a pocket. Here is what the specifications mean in practice.

What "up to 2000MB/s" means

fanxiang rates the drive at sequential reads of up to 2000MB/s and writes of up to 1800MB/s through USB 3.2 Gen 2. Sequential speed measures how fast one large file is copied, such as a video project or a game install. These are best-case figures, and real transfers depend on file sizes, free space and the port on your computer.

The brand adds that the drive does even better with a 20Gbps USB interface on the host device. USB 3.2 Gen 2 is a 10Gbps standard, so a faster port can give the drive more headroom. On older ports it still works, at lower speeds.

Pocket size and weight

The case is 85 x 50 x 8.6mm (about 3.3 x 2.0 x 0.3 inches) and weighs 1.6 ounces, around 45 grams. It's lighter and smaller than most phones, which makes it easy to keep in a camera bag or a jacket pocket.

Aluminum casing and heat

The drive uses an aluminum alloy unibody. fanxiang says the metal makes it more shock-resistant and helps it shed heat faster, and mentions a thermal solution for heavy use. Fast SSDs warm up during long copies, and a metal case typically helps spread that heat.

Cable and compatibility

The 2-in-1 cable has USB Type C-to-C and Type C-to-A ends, so it connects to modern USB-C laptops and to older computers with USB-A. fanxiang lists these as compatible:

  • Windows, macOS and Android systems
  • PCs, laptops and Macs
  • PS5, PS4 (Pro) and Xbox consoles
  • iPhone 15 and 15 Pro
  • Some OTG smartphones

The listing also states support for "Windows to Go", which lets a compatible system start from external storage.

Capacity and endurance

This is the 2TB size in a line that also includes 500GB, 1TB and 4TB. fanxiang gives it a 5-year after-sales service period or 1024TBW, and lifetime technical support. TBW stands for terabytes written, the amount of data that can be written to the drive over its life. A higher figure generally follows from a larger capacity, and 1024TBW is a large amount for everyday use.

Who it suits

A 2TB capacity makes sense for video editors, photographers, gamers with big libraries and anyone consolidating backups. An SSD has no moving parts, so it typically tolerates being carried far better than a spinning hard drive.

What to check before you buy

  • Your ports: note whether your device uses USB-C or USB-A and which USB speed it supports, since that sets the real speed.
  • Consoles and phones: check the device maker's guidance on external storage, because some devices limit how it can be used.
  • Formatting: drives may need reformatting to suit your operating system, so check how you plan to share files between a Mac and a PC.
  • Backups: keep important files in more than one place.
  • In the box: the drive and the 2-in-1 cable, as the listing describes.
