The fanxiang PS2100 is a 2TB external solid-state drive that fits in a pocket. It is meant for people who move large files between devices, such as photographers, video editors, students and gamers, and who want storage that is faster and sturdier than a spinning hard drive.
What the speed figures mean
fanxiang rates the drive at sequential reads of up to 2000MB/s and writes of up to 1800MB/s over a USB 3.2 Gen2 interface. Sequential speeds describe how quickly one large file, such as a video clip or a game install, moves from start to finish. Many small files usually transfer more slowly, and real-world results depend on the computer, the cable and the port. Figures like these are best-case numbers.
For comparison, a typical portable hard drive manages around 100 to 150MB/s, so an SSD of this class can cut long copy times considerably.
A body built for carrying
The drive has an aluminium housing with a reinforced frame and is listed as IP68. In general, IP68 means the enclosure is dust-tight and can withstand immersion in water under conditions set by the manufacturer. Those conditions matter, so read the manual before getting it wet, and keep the port dry and clean before plugging in.
A silicone sleeve in the package adds shock absorption, and a carabiner loop lets you clip the drive to a belt or bag. It measures about 3.7 x 2.2 x 0.5 inches (roughly 9.4 x 5.6 x 1.3 cm) and weighs around 0.3 lb (about 135 g).
Where it works
USB 3.2 Gen2 is a 10Gbps interface. fanxiang lists laptops, desktops, iPhones and the PS5 as compatible devices. Older USB ports usually still work but at lower speeds. To reach the top speeds you need a port and cable that support Gen2.
Phones and consoles can have their own rules about formats and storage use, so check the device's documentation for how external drives are supported.
Endurance and warranty
fanxiang backs the drive with a five-year quality assurance or up to 512TBW, as its terms specify. TBW stands for terabytes written, a measure of how much data can be written to the drive over its life. It is worth reading the warranty terms for exactly what is covered.
Who it suits
It suits anyone who edits large media files on the move, backs up photos in the field, carries game libraries between machines, or simply wants a faster way to move data. Because the drive is small and tough, it also works as a travel backup.
What to check before you buy
- Ports and cables: confirm that your device has a suitable USB port and that you have a cable that supports the speeds you want.
- Capacity: 2TB is a lot of space, but check it against your project sizes and backup plans.
- Device support: if you plan to use it with a phone or console, check how that device handles external storage.
- Backups: an SSD is still a single device, so keep a second copy of important files.
- What's in the box: the silicone sleeve and carabiner loop come with the drive, according to fanxiang; check for the cable.
