The EVGA SuperNOVA 850 GM is an 850-watt power supply in the compact SFX size. It is meant for small-form-factor PCs, where space is tight but the graphics card and processor still need plenty of power. It is 80 PLUS Gold rated and fully modular.
What SFX means
Standard desktop power supplies use the ATX size. SFX units are smaller and are designed for compact cases. The SuperNOVA 850 GM measures about 4.9 x 4.9 x 2.5 inches (roughly 125 x 125 x 64 mm) and weighs 2.2 lb (about 1 kg). EVGA says it also supports the ATX form factor with an included bracket, so it can go into a regular case that expects a full-size unit. Check the bracket fits your case before relying on it.
850 watts in a small package
Putting 850W in an SFX body is notable, since many compact units offer much less. A higher wattage typically gives headroom for a power-hungry graphics card plus a modern processor. As a rule of thumb, add up the rated power of your parts and choose a unit that covers it with room to spare, rather than running close to the limit.
80 PLUS Gold and ECO mode
The 80 PLUS Gold label means the unit met the programme's efficiency targets at set loads. In general, a more efficient power supply wastes less energy as heat. EVGA also lists an ECO mode that works with its fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) fan. Features like this typically let the fan stay off or turn slowly at light loads, which keeps a quiet desktop quiet. FDB fans are generally valued for smooth, long-lasting operation.
Modular cables and components
The design is fully modular, so you attach only the cables you need. In a small case, fewer cables means more room for airflow and easier assembly. EVGA says the unit uses 100% Japanese capacitors to support long-term reliability. It also includes a Power ON Self Tester, a small tool that helps check whether the power supply itself switches on, without being connected to a motherboard.
Warranty
EVGA lists a 10-year warranty. Read the terms for your region before you rely on them.
Who it suits
It suits builders of compact gaming or workstation PCs who need more power than most SFX units provide, and builders who want a small unit with an ATX bracket for flexibility.
What to check before you buy
- That your case accepts SFX power supplies, or ATX with the bracket, and has room for the cables.
- Your graphics card's power connectors and whether the cables included match them.
- Total power needs of your parts, plus headroom.
- Cable length for your case layout, since small cases often have short runs but sometimes unusual routing.
- The contents of the box, including the bracket and self tester.
