The EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G5 is an 850-watt internal power supply for desktop PCs. It converts mains power into the lower voltages that a motherboard, graphics card and drives need, and it is the part that every other component depends on. EVGA presents the G5 as a successor to its G3 series, with 80 Plus Gold certification, fully modular cables and a quiet fan.

What 850 watts means

The wattage is the maximum continuous power the unit can supply to the system. A PC rarely draws that much all the time; it only matters at peak load, such as a demanding graphics card and processor working together. A common approach is to add up the expected draw of your components and leave headroom, because power supplies typically run most efficiently and quietly when they are not working at their limit.

80 Plus Gold efficiency

The 80 Plus programme tests how much of the power drawn from the wall reaches the components rather than turning into heat. EVGA says the G5 is Gold certified, with 91% efficiency or higher under typical loads. Less wasted energy generally means less heat for the fan to remove.

Fully modular cables

"Fully modular" means every cable, including the main motherboard connector, plugs into the unit rather than being permanently attached. You connect only the cables your build needs. EVGA says this reduces clutter and improves airflow, and it usually makes tidy routing easier in a compact case.

Components and design

EVGA lists 100% Japanese capacitors and an active clamp plus DC-DC converter design intended to improve 3.3V and 5V stability. In general, capacitors smooth out the voltage the supply delivers, and stable low-voltage rails matter for the motherboard and storage. The company also says the unit follows the latest Intel power-on standards.

The fan and Eco mode

The G5 uses a fluid dynamic bearing fan. EVGA says this and its Eco mode give ultra-quiet operation and increased fan lifespan. Eco mode typically lets the fan stay off or run slowly at lower loads, spinning up only when the system gets demanding. The listing describes the fan as 135mm in one place, while the title refers to a compact 150mm unit size; the 150mm figure describes the case of the power supply itself.

Size and fit

The listing gives dimensions of about 5.9 x 5.9 x 3.4 inches (roughly 15 x 15 x 8.6 cm) and a weight of 7.0 lb (about 3.2 kg). The 150mm body is a standard ATX length that suits most cases, and a shorter unit leaves more room for cable routing behind the motherboard tray.

Warranty and support

EVGA gives the G5 a 10-year limited warranty and mentions its customer support. The conditions are set by the manufacturer, so read them for your region.

What to check before you buy

  • Add up your components' power needs, with graphics card and processor first, and leave some headroom.
  • Make sure your case takes a standard ATX power supply and that the depth fits alongside your cables.
  • Count the connectors you need: CPU, PCIe for graphics, SATA and so on, and check the cables included in the box match.
  • Confirm your graphics card's power connector type, since newer cards can need a specific cable.
  • Modular cables are brand and model specific, so don't mix them with another supply's.
  • Follow the manual when installing, and switch off and unplug the PC before working inside.

The short version

  • An 850W, ATX, 80 Plus Gold power supply with 91% or higher efficiency under typical loads, per EVGA.
  • Fully modular cabling for a cleaner build and better airflow.
  • Fluid dynamic bearing fan with an Eco mode for quiet operation.
  • Japanese capacitors and a 10-year limited warranty.
