The Corsair HX1000 is a 1000-watt internal power supply for desktop PCs. It converts mains power into the lower voltages that a PC's parts need, and it is aimed at high-performance builds where stable voltages and quiet running matter.

What 80 Plus Platinum means

The 80 Plus programme tests how efficiently a power supply converts mains power. Platinum is one of the higher tiers, and it requires efficiency of roughly 90% or more at typical loads. The remainder is lost as heat. Corsair says a Platinum unit runs cooler and draws less power from the wall than a less efficient one. In practice that means less heat to remove from the case, which is helpful for quiet cooling.

Fully modular cables

Fully modular means every cable detaches from the unit, including the main motherboard cable. You connect only the cables your build needs. Corsair says this gives a cleaner-looking build with better airflow, since there are no unused cables to tuck away. Modular cables are specific to a brand and series, so keep the cables that came with the unit and don't mix them with another model's.

Quiet cooling

The HX1000 has a 135mm fan with a fluid dynamic bearing (FDB), a design that typically runs quietly and lasts a long time. Its Zero RPM mode means the fan stays off at low loads, which Corsair describes as virtually silent operation. The fan starts up as the load and temperature rise.

Rails and standards

A 12V rail switch lets you pick a single 12V rail or multiple 12V rails. A single rail simply offers all the 12V power to any connector. Multiple rails split it and add over-current protection per rail. Most home builds are fine with the single-rail setting, but check the manual and your component needs.

The unit follows ATX12V v2.4 and EPS 2.92 standards and is backward compatible with ATX12V 2.2, 2.31 and 2.01 systems. Corsair also says it uses Japanese capacitors throughout and delivers tight voltages.

Choosing the right wattage

Wattage should match the total draw of your parts, mainly the graphics card and processor, with some headroom. A 1000W unit suits systems with a power-hungry graphics card or several drives. A smaller system will not need this much, and a power supply typically runs most efficiently in the middle of its load range.

Warranty and size

Corsair backs the HX1000 with a 10-year warranty. The listing gives dimensions of 5.9 x 7.1 x 3.4 inches and a weight of 4.3 lb (about 2 kg).

What to check before you buy

  • Case fit: confirm your case takes a standard ATX power supply of this size, and leaves room for the cables.
  • Connectors: count the PCIe, SATA and CPU connectors your parts need, and check that your graphics card's power connector matches.
  • Standards: the listing refers to ATX12V v2.4 and EPS 2.92; check that your motherboard and parts are compatible.
  • Wattage: add up your parts' rated power and leave headroom.
  • Mains supply: confirm the input voltage range for your region in the manual.
  • Installation: follow the manual and switch off and unplug the PC before opening it.
