The Meraki Go Router Firewall Plus (model GX50) from Cisco is a router and stateful firewall for small businesses. It is managed from the cloud with the Meraki Go mobile app or a web portal, so you can set up and adjust the network without a dedicated IT team.

Router, firewall and cloud management

A router connects your local network to the internet, and a stateful firewall tracks connections so that only wanted traffic gets in. In this product, both run in one compact unit measuring 9.4 x 5.1 x 1.1 inches and weighing 1 lb. Management is done in the cloud, meaning settings are made in an app or browser and sent to the device. Cisco says you can add multiple administrators, which helps when more than one person looks after the network.

Controls for the whole network

Cisco says you can block websites, prioritise bandwidth and set usage limits across the whole network. Prioritising bandwidth means giving important traffic, such as video calls or point-of-sale systems, preference over less urgent traffic. Usage limits let you cap how much particular users or devices consume.

VPN and throughput

The router supports both site-to-site VPN and client VPN. Site-to-site VPN securely joins networks at separate locations, while client VPN lets a person connect to the office network from elsewhere. Cisco lists 500+ Mbps of firewall throughput. This is the speed at which the firewall can process traffic, and it's relevant if your internet connection is fast. Four additional LAN ports are included for wired devices or switches.

Software updates and optional protection

Cisco states that there are no fees or licences for automatic security and software updates, app and web management, and tech support. DNS-based security powered by Cisco Umbrella is available as an optional subscription, and Cisco says it provides content filtering and protection against malware, phishing and command-and-control callbacks. That part is optional and separate.

Part of a wider Meraki Go setup

Cisco describes Meraki Go as a secure Wi-Fi solution for small businesses. This unit is the router and firewall, not a wireless access point, so Wi-Fi coverage would come from other equipment. The listing doesn't state which Meraki Go access points work with it, so check Cisco's documentation.

Who it suits

It fits small offices, shops and similar sites that want simple, central management and VPN access for remote work, without maintaining a traditional on-premises firewall.

What to check before you buy

  • Compare the 500+ Mbps firewall throughput with your internet connection speed.
  • Count the wired devices you need to connect to the four LAN ports.
  • Confirm how you will provide Wi-Fi, since this unit is a router and firewall.
  • Check that you're comfortable with cloud management and an account.
  • Decide whether you need the optional Umbrella subscription.
  • Read the documentation about VPN setup and supported devices.
