The ASUS ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro is a quad-band WiFi 7 router that works on its own or as part of an AiMesh mesh system. It is a high-end home networking product, with two 10G ports, many antennas and features for smart homes. Here is what the specs mean and who needs them.

What WiFi 7 adds

WiFi 7 (802.11be) builds on WiFi 6 with wider channels, 4096-QAM modulation and Multi-Link Operation (MLO). 4096-QAM packs more data into each signal than WiFi 6's 1024-QAM. MLO lets a device use more than one band at the same time, which can improve speed and reliability. ASUS cites quad-band speeds up to 30,000 Mbps in total. That figure is the combined theoretical maximum of all bands. Actual speeds depend on your devices, distance and environment, as ASUS's own disclaimer notes.

Quad-band and 16 streams

Quad-band means four radio bands instead of the usual two or three. The extra band can serve as a dedicated link between mesh nodes, which ASUS describes as providing robust backhaul. The description also mentions 16-stream connectivity. Twelve internal antennas and sixteen high-power front-end modules are meant, says ASUS, to remove dead zones in all directions, and a heat-dissipation design supports reliability.

Coverage and AiMesh

ASUS says one unit covers up to 4,000 sq ft, and a two-pack up to 8,000 sq ft. AiMesh lets you combine this router with other compatible ASUS routers into one network with a single name and seamless roaming. The system can scale with any ASUS extendable routers. Walls, floors and building materials all change real-world coverage.

Two 10G ports

Each unit has two 10G ports. A 10 gigabit Ethernet connection suits a fast fibre line, a network-attached storage (NAS) device or a workstation that moves large files. You need 10G-capable devices and cabling at the other end to use it.

Smart home and security

Smart Home Master lets you set up to three SSIDs (network names) for IoT devices, and includes instant VPN connections and parental controls. AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro, adds a one-tap security scan, broad VPN support and site-to-site VPN. ASUS describes the security as subscription-free.

Internet backup options

The WAN settings are flexible, and a USB port is ready for 4G LTE and 5G mobile tethering, giving an always-on connection if the main line fails. Your phone or mobile modem has to support it.

Size

The unit is about 6.9 x 2.8 x 8.6 inches (17.5 x 7 x 22 cm) and weighs 2.9 lb (1.3 kg).

Who it suits

It suits large homes, home offices and enthusiasts with fast internet, many devices and wired 10G gear. Smaller homes with a modest plan may not benefit from all of it.

What to check before you buy

  • Your internet plan: it needs a fast line to justify WiFi 7 and 10G.
  • Device support: WiFi 7 gains need WiFi 7 devices; older devices still connect.
  • Wiring: 10G needs suitable cables and equipment.
  • Coverage: consider how many units your home needs.
  • Placement: central, open positions generally work best.
  • Setup: check the manual for modem compatibility.

The short version

  • A quad-band WiFi 7 mesh router with MLO and 4096-QAM.
  • Rated at up to 30,000 Mbps combined; two 10G ports per unit.
  • AiMesh compatible; one unit covers up to 4,000 sq ft, according to ASUS.
  • Smart Home Master, VPN and AiProtection Pro.
  • USB port for 4G/5G tethering.
