The ASUS ZenWiFi BD5 Outdoor is a weatherproof WiFi 7 mesh unit designed to extend a network to a backyard, patio, garage or other spot where an indoor router can't be placed. It can be powered over an Ethernet cable and mounted on a wall or pole. Here is what its specs mean.

WiFi 7 in a dual-band unit

ASUS rates the BD5 at up to 5000 Mbps across two bands, and lists MLO and 4K-QAM. In general, WiFi 7 (802.11be) introduced Multi-Link Operation, which lets a device use more than one band at once to improve speed and reliability, and 4K-QAM, which packs more data into each transmission. Those gains apply when the connecting devices also support WiFi 7, while older devices still connect at their own speeds. The headline figure is a combined theoretical rate, not what a single device will typically see.

AiMesh and coverage

ASUS says the BD5 supports AiMesh and covers up to 2,500 square feet (about 230 square metres) in one unit. AiMesh links compatible ASUS routers into one network with a single name, so devices can move between nodes. The listing says the unit works with compatible ASUS routers, so check your router's model against ASUS's compatibility list. Coverage depends on walls, distance and interference, so treat the stated area as a best-case guide.

Built for the outdoors

The enclosure is IP65-certified, meaning it is dustproof and protected against water jets, according to the standard's definition. ASUS lists ESD and surge protection and an operating range of -30°C to 60°C. IP65 does not make a unit suitable for every location, so follow the installation guide on placement and sealing the cable entries.

Power and ports

The BD5 supports both Power over Ethernet and AC power. It has two 2.5G PoE-in ports with AI WAN detection, which ASUS says helps the unit work out which port connects to the internet. PoE lets a single cable carry data and power, which simplifies outdoor installs, but it needs a compatible PoE injector or switch. Check which PoE standard the unit expects in the manual. A 2.5G port needs suitable cable and equipment to deliver speeds above 1 Gbps.

Mounting

The unit can be wall-mounted, pole-mounted or placed on a flat surface. It measures about 4.2 x 4.2 x 7.9 inches (11 x 11 x 20 cm) and weighs 2.3 lb (about 1 kg), so it's compact enough for a post or eave.

Security and network features

ASUS lists AiProtection Pro, described as commercial-grade, along with VPN support. A Smart Home Master Network lets you set up to three SSIDs for IoT devices and parental controls, which keeps smart-home gear on its own network.

Who it suits

It suits homes with outdoor spaces that need WiFi, small workshops and outbuildings, and ASUS households already running AiMesh.

What to check before you buy

  • Router compatibility: confirm that your router supports AiMesh with this model.
  • Cabling: plan the Ethernet run to the mounting spot, and the PoE source.
  • Device support: WiFi 7 benefits need WiFi 7 clients.
  • Placement: check the manual on mounting height, orientation and weatherproofing the connections.
  • Wired speeds: your internet plan and cabling limit what the 2.5G ports deliver.
