The ASUS TUF Gaming TUF-AX6000 is a WiFi 6 router built for gaming and busy home networks. It has a dedicated gaming port, two 2.5 Gbps ports and support for ASUS AiMesh, so it can grow into a whole-home system. Here is what those specs mean.
What "AX6000" and WiFi 6 mean
AX6000 is a combined figure for the router's wireless bands, and ASUS lists speeds of up to 6000 Mbps. No single device reaches that number, since it adds together the speeds of the bands. Real-world speed depends on distance, walls, interference and what your devices support.
WiFi 6 brings OFDMA, which lets the router serve several devices in the same transmission, and 160 MHz channels, which are wider and can carry more data. ASUS says this gives four times the network efficiency, which matters most in homes with many devices at once. To use these features, your phones, laptops or consoles also need to support WiFi 6.
Wired gaming features
A dedicated gaming port prioritises the traffic of a device plugged into it, such as a console or PC. Wired connections generally have lower and steadier latency than wireless, and prioritisation helps when others are streaming or downloading.
ASUS also lists three-step port forwarding with Open NAT. Port forwarding opens specific connections to a device, which some games and servers need, and the brand says this removes the complicated manual setup.
Dual 2.5G ports
The router has dual 2.5 Gbps ports, which give flexible network layouts. A 2.5G port runs faster than the 1 Gbps ports on many routers, but you will only see the benefit if the device and cable at the other end also support 2.5G. They can suit a fast network storage device, a 2.5G PC or a link to a switch. Check the rest of the port layout in the manual.
AiMesh and security
AiMesh lets you combine this router with other AiMesh-compatible ASUS routers into one network with a single name, so your devices move between them. This helps in larger homes where one router doesn't cover all rooms.
The router includes AiProtection Pro network security, and Aura RGB lighting for the case. ASUS says the router undergoes verified testing for durability and stable operation. Setup and settings are managed through the ASUS Router App and a web interface.
Size
The listing gives 6.9 x 8.5 x 11.9 inches (about 17.5 x 21.6 x 30 cm) and 1.5 lb (about 0.7 kg).
Who it suits
It suits households with several gamers, streamers and smart devices, people with a 2.5G connection or device, and anyone who wants a router they can later extend with a mesh.
What to check before you buy
- Your devices: WiFi 6 gains need WiFi 6 devices.
- Your internet plan: the router can only use what your connection provides, and it needs a modem.
- 2.5G equipment: check that your PC or switch supports 2.5G.
- Coverage: consider the size of your home and whether you will want AiMesh nodes.
- Placement: put it in a central, open spot with room for the antennas.
- Setup: use the app or manual, and keep the firmware up to date.
