The ASUS TUF Gaming A17 (model TUF706IU-AS76) is a 17.3-inch Windows gaming laptop built around an AMD Ryzen 7 processor and a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card. It is aimed at people who want a large screen and a desktop-style gaming and multitasking machine they can still carry from room to room. This page explains what the main specs mean in practice.
The processor and graphics
At the centre is a quad-core AMD Ryzen 7 4800H. The "H" suffix typically marks a higher-power laptop chip designed for sustained workloads such as games, video editing and heavy multitasking, rather than the thin-and-light chips used in ultraportables.
Graphics come from an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti with 6GB of dedicated video memory, and ASUS mentions "ROG Boost". The GTX 1660 Ti is a non-ray-tracing card from the generation before RTX. Cards in this class are generally associated with smooth play at 1080p in many popular titles, with settings adjusted to suit each game's demands.
A 120Hz Full HD screen
The 17.3-inch display is a Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS-type panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Refresh rate is how many times per second the picture updates. At 120Hz, motion typically looks smoother than on the 60Hz screens common on everyday laptops, though you only see the benefit when the game or app is actually producing that many frames per second. ASUS describes the bezels as narrow, which lets a large panel fit into a smaller body.
Memory, storage and Wi-Fi
The laptop has 16GB of DDR4 memory running at 3200MHz, which is a comfortable amount for current games and for keeping a browser, chat and a launcher open together. Storage is a 1TB PCIe NVMe M.2 solid-state drive. NVMe drives are typically much faster than older SATA drives, which helps with boot times, game loading and large file transfers.
Wireless is Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) from Intel, which ASUS rates at data rates up to 1.7Gbps. Real-world speeds depend on your router and home network. The laptop ships with Windows 10 Home.
Build, cooling and battery
ASUS says the TUF line uses MIL-STD-810 military-standard construction, a set of test methods covering factors such as drops, vibration and temperature. It is a durability benchmark, not a guarantee against damage. The company also highlights a patented Anti-Dust Cooling (ADC) system aimed at keeping the cooling path clear over the laptop's life.
The 90Wh battery is described by ASUS as giving nearly double the battery life of earlier versions. Gaming drains any battery quickly, so expect to plug in for demanding play. The backlit keyboard is rated for 20 million keystrokes.
Size and weight
It measures about 15.7 x 10.6 x 1.0 inches (roughly 40 x 27 x 2.5 cm) and weighs 5.7 lb (about 2.6 kg). That is portable for a 17-inch gaming laptop, but you will notice it in a backpack.
Who it suits
It suits players who want a big screen and a smooth refresh rate on a laptop, students or creators who want a large workspace, and anyone replacing a desktop who still wants to move the machine occasionally.
What to check before you buy
- Size: a 17.3-inch laptop needs a bigger bag and desk space than a 15-inch model.
- Games you play: compare the recommended graphics requirements of your favourite titles against a GTX 1660 Ti with 6GB.
- Operating system: the listing describes Windows 10 Home, so check which version is installed and how updates work for your situation.
- Power: the charger is part of the package for a 90Wh battery machine; check the adapter and how you plan to carry it.
- Upgrades: check the manual for how memory and storage can be accessed, and what that means for the warranty.
- Connectivity: confirm the ports match your mouse, headset, monitor and any other peripherals.
