The ASUS TUF Gaming A17 (2023, model FA707XU) is a 17.3-inch gaming laptop built around an AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU. It is aimed at people who want a large screen and desktop-style gaming performance in a single portable machine. Here is what the main specs mean.
Processor and graphics
The Ryzen 9 7940HS is a high-end mobile processor from AMD's Ryzen 7000 series. ASUS pairs it with the GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU, rated at 140W maximum total graphics power (TGP). TGP is the power allowance the GPU can use, and it matters because the same GPU name can perform differently depending on how much power a laptop gives it. A higher TGP generally allows higher sustained clock speeds, at the cost of more heat.
The RTX 40 series supports hardware ray tracing and NVIDIA's AI-based upscaling features in games that include them. How well a title runs depends on the game, its settings and the resolution.
Memory and storage
The laptop has 16GB of DDR5-4800 memory, enough for most current games and everyday multitasking. Storage is a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. PCIe 4.0 is a fast connection for solid-state drives, which typically means short load times for games and the operating system. ASUS says there is an additional SSD slot, so storage can be expanded without replacing the existing drive. Check the manual before opening the case.
The 144Hz display
The screen is 17.3 inches with a Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate, so the image updates 144 times per second. That is smoother than a standard 60Hz panel when the game can output high frame rates. Adaptive-Sync lets the display match the GPU's output to reduce stutter and tearing. A 17-inch panel at Full HD is also forgiving for the GPU, which helps frame rates.
Cooling and the MUX switch
High-core-count processors produce a lot of heat under load. ASUS fits a pair of 84-blade Arc Flow fans to handle the Ryzen 9. Expect fan noise during demanding games, as with most gaming laptops.
The MUX switch routes frames directly from the GPU to the display, bypassing the integrated graphics, which ASUS says improves gaming performance. Advanced Optimus switches between graphics modes automatically depending on the task, to help battery life during lighter use.
Durability
ASUS says the A17 is tested to the MIL-STD-810H standard, covering drops, vibration, humidity and extreme temperatures. Such tests describe conditions the device was tested against and do not make it indestructible. The laptop measures about 15.6 x 10.4 x 0.9 inches and weighs 5.7 lb.
Software and extras
It ships with Windows 11 and Wi-Fi 6. ASUS also lists a 90-day Xbox Game Pass Ultimate pass, which gives access to a library of games for that period.
Who it suits
- Gamers who want a large screen and a powerful mobile CPU and GPU.
- Creators who want a fast processor and a dedicated GPU for editing and 3D work.
- Students and professionals who want a single machine for study, work and games.
What to check before you buy
- Size and weight: a 17.3-inch laptop at 5.7 lb is more of a transportable than an ultraportable.
- Battery and charger: check the manual for battery life claims and charger size.
- Display needs: Full HD at 144Hz suits many players, but check whether you want higher resolution or colour accuracy.
- Storage: confirm the spare SSD slot type and what you plan to add.
- Noise and heat: gaming laptops run their fans loudly under load; consider headphones.
- Pass and offers: check the terms of the included game pass and when it must be redeemed.
The short version
- 17.3-inch Full HD gaming laptop with a 144Hz display and Adaptive-Sync.
- AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS and GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU at 140W maximum TGP.
- 16GB DDR5-4800, 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, spare SSD slot, Wi-Fi 6 and Windows 11.
- MUX switch with Advanced Optimus, dual Arc Flow fans, MIL-STD-810H tested.
