The ASUS TUF Gaming 850W Gold (model TUF-GAMING-850G) is a fully modular ATX power supply for desktop PCs. It converts mains electricity to the voltages inside a computer, and its ATX 3.0 compliance and 16-pin cable are aimed at builds with a recent high-power graphics card.

What 850W and 80 Plus Gold mean

The 850W figure is the maximum continuous output. A gaming PC with a mid-to-high-end graphics card commonly falls within this range, and spare capacity typically means the unit runs cooler and quieter at everyday loads. 80 Plus Gold is an efficiency certification: the unit meets a defined efficiency level at standard loads, so less energy is lost as heat. ASUS says the certification is the result of Japanese capacitors and other premium components.

ATX 3.0 and PCIe Gen 5.0 graphics cards

ATX 3.0 is a power supply standard that adds support for the short power spikes of modern graphics cards. ASUS bundles a 16-pin PCIe cable that can carry up to 600W to PCIe Gen 5.0 graphics cards. Graphics cards with older 8-pin connectors need the right cables, so check what is supplied.

Modular cables

Fully modular means all cables detach, so you connect only what your build uses. That generally makes routing easier, improves airflow in the case and keeps the interior tidy.

Fan, bearings and durability

The Axial-tech fan has a smaller hub that allows longer blades, and a barrier ring that ASUS says increases downward air pressure. Dual ball bearings are described as lasting up to twice as long as sleeve bearings. Capacitors and chokes pass tests for ASUS's military-grade certification, and a protective PCB coating guards against moisture, dust and extreme temperatures. A 10-year warranty backs the unit, so check its terms with ASUS.

Size

It measures about 5.9 x 5.9 x 3.4 inches and weighs 5.5 lb (about 2.5 kg), which fits standard ATX cases that take a power supply of this depth.

Who it suits

It suits builders of gaming or creative PCs who want a modular unit with a 16-pin cable and room to upgrade the graphics card. Smaller systems with low-power parts may not need 850W.

What to check before you buy

  • Power needs: add up your CPU and graphics card needs and check the graphics card maker's recommendation.
  • Connectors: confirm the cables match your graphics card, motherboard and drives.
  • Case fit: check that your case takes a standard ATX power supply.
  • Cables: use only the cables supplied for this unit, because modular cable pinouts vary between brands.
  • Installation: switch off and unplug the PC before working inside, follow the manual, and follow local electrical codes.
  • Spare parts: keep the cables in case you rebuild.
