The ASUS RT-BE96U is a tri-band WiFi 7 (802.11be) router that ASUS calls its first of that type. It targets homes with many connected devices and heavy use such as gaming, AR/VR and smart-home gear. Here is what the headline specs mean and what the router needs around it.
What BE19000 means
The BE19000 label adds up the maximum theoretical speeds of the router's three bands, which ASUS puts at about 19,000 Mbps in total. No single device reaches that figure. A real connection uses one band, or several with Multi-Link Operation, and ASUS notes that actual throughput and coverage vary with network conditions, building materials and traffic.
6GHz, 320MHz and 4096-QAM
WiFi 7 adds improvements to the 6GHz band that older routers lack. ASUS highlights two:
- 320MHz channels double the width available in WiFi 6, giving more room for data.
- 4096-QAM packs more data into each signal, which ASUS says raises speed.
ASUS says these give about 2.4 times the speed with lower latency and interference. Your devices must also support WiFi 7 and 6GHz to benefit; older devices still connect on the other bands. The 6GHz band typically has a shorter range through walls than 2.4GHz or 5GHz.
Multi-Link Operation
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) lets a compatible device use several bands at once. ASUS says this keeps connections stable and transfers efficient. In general, MLO matters most for devices that move around or share a busy network.
Dual 10G ports
Two 10 Gbps WAN/LAN ports are the router's wired highlight. ASUS says they give up to ten times faster data transfer for demanding tasks. In practice, you need cables, a modem or network device, and a computer or storage system that also support 10 Gbps to use them. They also suit multi-gigabit internet plans.
Security and mesh
ASUS lists AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro, with a one-tap security scan and Safe Browsing, described as subscription-free. The router also supports AiMesh, so you can add compatible ASUS routers to cover a larger home. Multi-RU and puncturing, listed in the title, are WiFi 7 techniques that help the router use channels more efficiently when parts are busy.
Size
It measures about 13.8 x 13.8 x 8.6 inches (35 x 35 x 22 cm) and weighs 4.1 lb (1.9 kg), so it needs open shelf space with airflow.
Who it suits
It suits larger households with many devices, people with multi-gigabit connections or fast home networks, and early adopters of WiFi 7 devices.
What to check before you buy
- Your devices: WiFi 7 benefits need WiFi 7 clients; check yours.
- Internet plan: speeds above 1 Gbps need a plan and modem that can deliver them.
- Wired gear: 10G ports need matching cables and devices.
- Home layout: thick walls reduce range, especially on 6GHz.
- Placement: a central, open spot usually works well.
- Setup: check the app and web interface details in the manual.
