ASUS RT-BE92U BE9700 Tri-Band WiFi 7 Router: features and who it suits

The ASUS RT-BE92U is a tri-band WiFi 7 (802.11be) router rated at BE9700, with up to 9700 Mbps of combined wireless speed. It is meant for homes with many connected devices, a fast internet connection, or a smart home that needs its own network segment.

What the BE9700 label means

The number is the sum of the maximum theoretical speeds of the three bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz). No single device gets 9700 Mbps. Each device connects on one band (or, with MLO, several), at a speed that depends on its own WiFi hardware, distance and walls. The label is best used to compare routers' capacity.

WiFi 7 features

ASUS highlights two things. The first is 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band: wider channels carry more data, and 6 GHz is typically less crowded than older bands, but its range is shorter. The second is 4096-QAM, which packs more data into each signal and raises throughput in good conditions. Both need devices that support WiFi 7 to show a benefit; older devices will still connect.

Multi-Link Operation (MLO) lets a compatible device use more than one band at once. ASUS says this keeps connections stable and transfers efficient. Again, the client device must support MLO.

Wired and WAN options

The listing mentions up to 20G of wired capacity and 10G networking. It also describes AI WAN detection for an always-on internet connection and a USB port for 4G LTE and 5G mobile tethering, which can act as a backup if the main line fails. Check the manual or specifications for the exact port layout and speeds.

Security and VPN

ASUS lists AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro, a one-tap security scan and Safe Browsing, and calls the security features subscription-free. VPN features include site-to-site VPN and the Instant Guard app for connecting over public WiFi. Parental controls are included too. As with any router, keep the firmware updated and follow the manufacturer's advice.

Smart home and AiMesh

Smart Home Master allows up to three SSIDs, so smart-home devices can be set up and managed apart from phones and computers. AiMesh lets compatible ASUS routers be linked into one network for roaming around the home. The router measures about 11.3 x 4.0 x 9.7 in and weighs 1.7 lb.

Who it suits

It suits households with a fast plan and several WiFi 7-capable devices, people who want a separate IoT network, and anyone planning to extend coverage later with other AiMesh routers.

What to check before you buy

  • Your internet plan: make sure the wired ports match the speed you pay for.
  • Your devices: WiFi 7 benefits need WiFi 7 clients.
  • Home size: a single router may not cover a large or multi-storey home; think about mesh.
  • Modem: check whether you need your provider's modem in front of the router.
  • Placement: open, central, raised locations usually give the best coverage.
