The ASUS RT-BE88U is a dual-band WiFi 7 router rated at BE7200, with 10 Gigabit wired ports, an SFP+ connection and mesh support through ASUS AiMesh. It is built for homes and small offices with fast internet connections and plenty of wired devices. The listing describes this unit as renewed.
What WiFi 7 and BE7200 mean
WiFi 7 is the generation of wireless standard that follows WiFi 6 and 6E. ASUS lists up to 7200Mbps of combined throughput on two bands. That is a theoretical maximum shared across the bands, and real speeds depend on your devices, distance and walls. Two features stand out. 4096-QAM packs more data into each radio signal, and Multi-Link Operation (MLO) lets a compatible device use more than one band at once, which can improve speed and reliability. You need WiFi 7 devices to benefit fully, though older devices still connect.
Wired capacity
The back panel is where this router differs from many home models. ASUS lists one 10G SFP+ port and one 10G WAN/LAN port, four 2.5G ports and four 1G ports. SFP+ is a slot for a fibre or direct-attach module, often used to connect a fast NAS or switch. ASUS adds these up to a 34G combined WAN/LAN capacity, and the description mentions up to nine LAN ports.
Keeping the connection up
A quad-core 2.6GHz 64-bit CPU drives the router. For connection resilience, ASUS lists AI WAN detection, flexible WAN configurations and a USB port that supports 4G LTE and 5G mobile tethering, giving you a backup if the main line drops.
Network features
- AiMesh: the router can pair with other compatible ASUS routers to build a mesh that covers a larger space under one network name.
- Guest Network Pro: up to five SSIDs, which helps separate smart-home devices or visitors from your main devices.
- VPN and security: built-in VPN and network security features, plus parental controls.
Size and placement
The unit stands 11.8 inches tall, measures 7.4 x 2.4 inches at the base and weighs 2.5 lb (about 1.1 kg). Routers generally work best in a central, open spot, away from thick walls and metal.
Who it suits
It suits households with fast fibre or cable internet, creators and gamers moving large files over a wired network, and small offices that want a NAS or switch on a 10G link. People with a modest connection and few devices may not use most of its capacity.
What to check before you buy
- Your internet plan: check the speed and the connection type your provider supplies, and whether it ends in Ethernet or fibre.
- Your devices: confirm which of them support WiFi 7 so you know what to expect.
- 10G needs: 10G speeds need matching cables, switches and network adapters.
- Condition: the listing marks this unit as renewed, so confirm what is included and the warranty terms.
- Mesh plans: check which ASUS models are compatible with AiMesh.
- Setup: follow the manual for firmware updates and security settings.
