The ASUS RT-BE82U is a dual-band WiFi 7 (802.11be) router with five 2.5GbE ports. It is designed for homes with fast internet connections and many connected devices, and it can be combined with other AiMesh routers to cover a larger space. Here is what the main specs mean.

WiFi 7 and the 6500 Mbps figure

WiFi 7 is the newest generation of the standard. ASUS rates this router at up to 6500 Mbps, a combined theoretical figure across its two bands. Real-world speeds are lower and depend on your devices, distance, walls and interference. You need WiFi 7 devices to get WiFi 7 features, but older WiFi 6 and WiFi 5 devices can typically still connect.

4096-QAM packs more data into each radio signal. ASUS says it increases a single band's transmission speed by 1.2 times. Multi-Link Operation (MLO) lets a compatible device use multiple bands at the same time, which ASUS says helps keep connections stable and transfers efficient. MLO needs support on the client device as well.

Five 2.5GbE ports

All five wired ports run at 2.5 Gbps, faster than ordinary gigabit Ethernet, if your devices and cables support it. That helps with a fast internet plan, a network storage device or a desktop. ASUS says the ports prioritise traffic to optimise wired performance. Check which port is the WAN (internet) port and how many remain for your devices.

AiMesh and whole-home coverage

AiMesh lets you link compatible ASUS routers into one network so devices roam between them under one network name. The RT-BE82U is listed as an extendable AiMesh router, so you can start with one and add another later if coverage falls short. Check ASUS's AiMesh compatibility list before pairing different models.

Network security and controls

AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro, is described as commercial-grade network security with a one-tap security scan and Safe Browsing. The router also lists parental controls, VPNs and up to three SSIDs for IoT devices, which lets smart-home gadgets sit on their own network name apart from your computers and phones. Keep the router's firmware up to date, as the manual advises.

Size

The listing gives dimensions of about 13.9 x 0.9 x 10.4 inches and a weight of 1.1 lb. Check the manual for placement and mounting guidance.

Who it suits

It suits households that have, or plan to have, WiFi 7 devices and a fast connection, and users who want several 2.5GbE wired ports plus the option of a mesh network later.

What to check before you buy

  • Internet plan: confirm your plan and modem can use speeds above 1 Gbps; otherwise the 2.5GbE ports go partly unused.
  • Your devices: WiFi 7 features need WiFi 7 clients.
  • Modem: check you have a suitable modem and the connection type your provider uses.
  • Home size: one router may not cover a large or multi-storey home; plan for AiMesh.
  • Wired devices: make sure your cables and network cards support 2.5GbE.
  • Bands: it is dual-band, so there is no third band for dedicated backhaul.

The short version

  • A dual-band WiFi 7 router from ASUS, rated at up to 6500 Mbps.
  • Five 2.5GbE ports, 4096-QAM and Multi-Link Operation.
  • Extendable AiMesh support for whole-home coverage.
  • AiProtection Pro by Trend Micro, parental controls, VPNs and up to three IoT SSIDs.
  • Real-world speeds depend on devices and conditions.
