The ASUS RT-BE58U is a dual-band WiFi 7 (802.11be) router in the BE3600 class. It is meant as the main router for a home or small office, with an extendable AiMesh design, a 2.5G port, four 1G ports and a built-in security suite. It stands upright and measures about 7.6 x 2.3 x 9.4 inches (19 x 6 x 24 cm), weighing 1.0 lb.
What BE3600 and WiFi 7 mean
ASUS gives a total networking speed of about 3600 Mbps: 688 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 2882 Mbps on the 5GHz band. It is a 2x2 design with up to 160MHz bandwidth. Those are theoretical maximums shared across the bands, and real-world speeds depend on distance, walls, interference and the devices connecting. Your devices need WiFi 7 support to use the full feature set; older WiFi 6 and WiFi 5 devices still connect.
4096-QAM and Multi-Link Operation
QAM describes how much data is packed into each radio signal. ASUS says 4096-QAM raises a single band's transmission speed by 1.2 times compared with the previous generation. ASUS also says the router is 1.2 times faster than 802.11ax 2x2 dual-band routers.
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) lets a compatible device use more than one band at the same time. ASUS says this keeps connections stable and transfers efficient. MLO helps only when the device on the other end supports it.
Wired and mobile internet options
ASUS lists one 2.5G port and four 1G ports. A 2.5G port suits a faster internet plan or a fast wired device, and the others suit computers, consoles or a network switch. Wired connections also take load off the wireless bands.
For the internet connection, AI WAN detection is described as helping establish always-on internet, and a USB port is ready for 4G LTE and 5G mobile tethering. In general, that means a phone or modem can serve as a backup connection.
Smart Home Master, parental controls and VPN
The Smart Home Master feature lets you create up to three SSIDs (separate network names) for IoT devices, with the listing also mentioning instant VPN connections and parental controls. Separate networks are a common way to keep smart plugs, cameras and other devices apart from your computers. The model name's mention of a Kid's Network points to a dedicated network profile for children's devices.
Security
ASUS includes AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro, which it describes as commercial-grade, with a one-tap security scan and Safe Browsing. As with any router, keeping the firmware up to date matters, so check the manual for update steps.
Who it suits
It suits households with many connected devices, people upgrading to WiFi 7 phones and laptops, and anyone wanting to expand later with extra AiMesh nodes. A larger home may need more than one unit.
What to check before you buy
- Home size: one dual-band router may not cover a large or multi-storey home; AiMesh lets you add compatible units.
- Your internet plan: the router can't exceed the speed your provider supplies.
- Your devices: WiFi 7 benefits need WiFi 7 clients.
- Modem: confirm whether your provider's modem needs to be set to bridge mode.
- Ports: make sure the number of wired ports meets your needs.
- Setup: check the manual and the ASUS app for first-time setup steps.
