The ASUS RT-BE55 is a dual-band WiFi 7 router aimed at homes that want newer wireless technology, a fast wired internet connection and a way to keep smart-home gadgets on their own network. It can also work as part of an AiMesh system with other compatible ASUS routers. Here is what its main specifications mean in practice.
What WiFi 7 means on a dual-band router
WiFi 7 is the common name for the 802.11be standard. ASUS rates the RT-BE55 at up to 3600 Mbps across its two bands, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. That figure is the combined theoretical maximum, not a speed a single device will reach. Real speeds depend on distance, walls, interference and the device itself. Some WiFi 7 routers add a third, 6 GHz band; this one is dual-band, so it doesn't.
MLO and 4K-QAM
The listing names two WiFi 7 features. 4K-QAM packs more data into each radio signal, which typically raises peak speeds at close range for devices that support it. MLO, or Multi-Link Operation, lets a compatible device use more than one band at once instead of choosing one. In general this can improve reliability and reduce delays. Both features need devices that also support WiFi 7; older phones and laptops still connect, but they use their own, older standard.
Coverage and antennas
ASUS says the router has four internal antennas and four high-power front-end modules, and describes coverage of up to 2,000 square feet (about 185 square metres). Coverage figures are best-case estimates. Building materials, floor plans and neighbouring networks usually reduce them. For larger homes, AiMesh may help.
AiMesh for larger homes
AiMesh lets several compatible ASUS routers join up as a single network with one name, so devices move between them as you walk around. The RT-BE55 can be extended this way, according to ASUS. Check ASUS's compatibility list before mixing models, because not every ASUS router supports it.
The 2.5G port and wired connections
The router has a 2.5G Ethernet WAN port, the socket that connects to your modem or fibre terminal. This matters if your internet plan is faster than one gigabit per second, since a standard gigabit port would cap it. The listing says the 2.5G port also suits a wired backhaul. The listing doesn't give the number or speed of the LAN ports, so confirm those if you plan to connect several wired devices.
Smart-home network and security
ASUS says you can create up to three SSIDs, or separate WiFi network names, through its Smart Home Master Network. This lets you keep smart-home devices apart from your computers and phones, and apply parental controls to some of them. The router also includes AiProtection, which ASUS calls commercial-grade, and support for VPNs. Security tools like these are a useful extra, but regular firmware updates and a strong admin password matter just as much.
Who it suits
It suits households with many connected devices, people with an internet plan faster than gigabit, and anyone who wants to start with one router and add a mesh node later. It is less relevant if your devices are all older WiFi standards, though the router still supports them.
What to check before you buy
- Your internet plan and modem: confirm the modem has a port that matches the router's 2.5G WAN port.
- Device support: WiFi 7 benefits need WiFi 7 phones, laptops or adapters.
- Home size: check the coverage claim against your floor area and layout.
- Mesh plans: look up which ASUS models work together in AiMesh.
- Ports and setup: confirm the LAN port count and how the app handles setup.
The short version
- A dual-band WiFi 7 router rated at up to 3600 Mbps, with MLO and 4K-QAM.
- Four internal antennas, with ASUS citing coverage of up to 2,000 square feet.
- 2.5G WAN port and AiMesh extendability with compatible ASUS routers.
- Up to three SSIDs for smart-home and parental-control use, plus AiProtection and VPN support.
