The ASUS RT-AXE7800 is a tri-band WiFi 6E router for home networks. Its main addition over a standard WiFi 6 router is a third radio on the 6 GHz band, which gives compatible devices a less crowded channel. ASUS rates the combined speed at up to 7800 Mbps.
What WiFi 6E and tri-band mean
A tri-band router has three radios: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and, here, 6 GHz. The 6 GHz band is new spectrum that older devices don't use, so there is typically less interference from neighbours' networks and old gadgets. ASUS says it increases network capacity and gives more stable connectivity. The catch is that only WiFi 6E devices can connect on 6 GHz, and 6 GHz signals usually cover shorter distances and pass through walls less well.
The 7800 Mbps figure is the sum across all three bands. A single device won't reach it, and ASUS's own disclaimer notes that real throughput and coverage vary with traffic, building materials and network overhead.
Wired connection
The listing mentions a 2.5G port. This lets a wired device or a modem exceed the usual 1 Gbps limit, if the other equipment and your internet plan support it.
Security and parental controls
ASUS lists several features:
- AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro, for home network security.
- Instant Guard, a one-click shareable VPN for use away from home.
- Safe Browsing, which ASUS says blocks undesirable content and filters explicit search results.
- Parental controls with monitoring, content filters and per-device settings, at no extra cost per the brand.
Setup of any filtering is up to you, and these tools work as described in the router's manual.
AiMesh
AiMesh lets you add other AiMesh-compatible ASUS routers to build a single network with seamless roaming. That helps if one router doesn't cover the whole house.
Size
It measures about 8.3 x 9.5 x 2.4 inches (21 x 24 x 6 cm) and weighs 2.3 lb (about 1 kg), so it sits on a shelf or desk rather than disappearing into a wall.
Who it suits
It suits households with several WiFi 6E devices, those who want a 2.5G wired port, and people who want built-in security and family controls without extra apps.
What to check before you buy
- Devices: check how many of yours support WiFi 6E; others will use the 2.4 or 5 GHz bands.
- Internet plan: confirm your modem and plan to see if the 2.5G port is useful.
- Coverage: consider the size of your home and whether you'll need AiMesh.
- Regional rules: 6 GHz availability depends on local regulations.
- Features: check which security tools need a subscription in your region.
The short version
- A tri-band WiFi 6E router with a 6 GHz band and up to 7800 Mbps combined.
- 2.5G port and AiMesh support.
- AiProtection Pro, Instant Guard, Safe Browsing and parental controls.
- Real speeds depend on your home and devices.
