The ASUS RT-AX86U is a dual-band WiFi 6 (802.11ax) router aimed at busy homes and online gamers. It combines fast wireless, a 2.5 Gbps wired port and built-in network security in one unit. Here is what its headline numbers mean and what to confirm before choosing it.
What "up to 5700 Mbps" actually describes
ASUS rates the router at AX5700. That figure is the combined theoretical maximum across both radio bands, using WiFi 6 and 160 MHz-wide channels. No single device gets that number. A typical laptop or phone connects at a fraction of it, and real speeds depend on distance, walls, interference and what the device itself supports. The useful takeaway is headroom: several devices can stream, game and download at once without the router being the limit.
The 2.5G port and 2 Gbps connections
Most routers have gigabit (1 Gbps) ports. The RT-AX86U adds a 2.5 Gbps wired port, which suits a fast network-attached storage drive, a gaming PC with a 2.5G network adapter, or an internet line faster than 1 Gbps. ASUS also lists aggregated 2 Gbps WAN connections, meaning it supports internet service up to 2 Gbps. The benefit only appears if your internet plan and the device at the other end can use the speed, so check both.
Mobile Game Mode and low latency
For games, latency often matters more than raw speed. ASUS says Mobile Game Mode reduces lag for mobile gaming with a tap in the ASUS Router app, by prioritising game traffic. Port forwarding is also listed, which helps some consoles, game servers and remote-access tools reach your network.
Security and VPN features
The router includes AiProtection Pro, which ASUS says is powered by Trend Micro, to help protect devices on the home network. The listing describes the security features as subscription-free. ASUS Instant Guard offers a one-click, sharable secure VPN for use when you are away from home. As with any router, keep the firmware updated and use a strong administrator password.
Growing the network with AiMesh
If one router can't cover a larger or multi-storey home, AiMesh lets you add another AiMesh-compatible ASUS router to form a single network with seamless roaming. The second unit can be a different compatible model, so you can start with one router and extend later.
Who it suits
It suits households with many connected devices, gamers who want a wired 2.5G link, and anyone with a fast internet plan who wants more than a basic router.
What to check before you buy
- Your internet plan: confirm your provider's speed and whether you need a separate modem, as this is a router.
- Device support: WiFi 6 benefits require WiFi 6 devices; older devices still connect but at their own speeds.
- Wired devices: check whether anything you own has a 2.5G port.
- Coverage: think about home size and layout, and whether you may add an AiMesh node.
- Placement and power: it measures about 9.5 x 3.9 x 12.8 inches with antennas and weighs 1.8 lb, and uses a 19 V power adapter.
The short version
- Dual-band WiFi 6 router rated by ASUS at up to 5700 Mbps combined.
- One 2.5 Gbps wired port and support for aggregated 2 Gbps WAN connections.
- Mobile Game Mode, port forwarding and AiProtection Pro security.
- Instant Guard VPN and AiMesh compatibility for extending coverage.
