The ASUS RT-AX86S is a WiFi 6 router aimed at households with many connected devices and at gamers who care about low latency. It replaces the router supplied by an internet provider and adds a faster wireless standard, a 2.5G network port and tools for prioritising game traffic. Here is what its specifications mean and what to confirm before choosing it.
What AX5700 and WiFi 6 mean
ASUS describes the RT-AX86S as a dual-band WiFi 6 router with speeds of up to 5700 Mbps. That figure is the combined theoretical maximum of its radio bands, not what a single phone or laptop will reach. In practice, any one device gets a share of one band, and real throughput depends on distance, walls, interference and how busy the network is. ASUS itself notes that actual throughput and coverage will be lower than the headline number.
WiFi 6 (802.11ax) is designed to handle many devices at once more efficiently than older standards. The catch, as ASUS points out, is that a device must be WiFi 6 capable to benefit from those features. Older devices still connect, but they use the older standards.
The 2.5G port and a 2 Gbps connection
The router has a 2.5G LAN/WAN port, and ASUS says traffic through it is given top priority. A 2.5 Gbps port can carry more than a standard gigabit port, which matters for fast fibre plans, or for connecting a PC or network storage device that can use the extra speed. The description says the router supports internet connections of up to 2 Gbps. If your plan is slower, the port still works, but the extra capacity won't show up in speed tests.
Gaming features
ASUS lists Triple-level Game Acceleration, which it says speeds up game traffic from the device to the game server, along with a Mobile Game Mode for low-latency mobile gaming. Features like these generally work by prioritising game packets over other traffic, so a download or video stream is less likely to cause lag. They can't fix a slow or unstable connection from the provider.
Hardware and coverage
The listing mentions a quad-core processor, a cooling system and an optimised antenna design. A faster processor helps when the router is handling many devices, security features and traffic rules at once. ASUS says the router covers up to about 2,500 square feet, although walls, floors and building materials reduce this considerably. The unit measures roughly 12.8 x 3.9 x 9.5 inches (about 32 x 10 x 24 cm) and weighs 1.8 lb (0.8 kg).
Growing the network with AiMesh
The RT-AX86S supports AiMesh, which lets you add another AiMesh-compatible ASUS router so devices roam between them under one network name. This is a common way to cover a larger or multi-storey home without replacing the first router. A wired link between the two units is usually more stable than a wireless one.
Who it suits
It suits homes with many phones, consoles, streaming devices and PCs, and people with a fast home internet plan who want a 2.5G port. It also suits anyone who may later add a second AiMesh unit.
What to check before you buy
- WiFi bands: the feature text mentions 6 GHz and tri-band operation, while the product name and description call it dual-band. Confirm the bands on the box and the manufacturer's specification page.
- Your devices: WiFi 6 benefits apply only to WiFi 6 devices.
- Your plan: check your internet speed and whether your modem or ONT can use a 2.5G connection.
- Coverage: think about home size and construction; a mesh add-on may be needed.
- Power: the listing gives two adapter specifications (12 V and 19.5 V); use only the adapter supplied for your version.
- Setup: check the manual and the manufacturer's app for setup and firmware updates.
The short version
- A dual-band WiFi 6 router rated by ASUS at up to 5700 Mbps combined.
- One 2.5G LAN/WAN port and support for internet connections up to 2 Gbps.
- Game acceleration features and Mobile Game Mode.
- Quad-core processor and AiMesh support for adding more units.
- Real-world speed and range depend on your home and devices.
