The ASUS RT-AX82U is a dual-band WiFi 6 router rated at AX5400, with gaming features, RGB lighting and built-in security software. It aims to give a home network smooth performance for phones, consoles and PCs. Here is what the specs mean and what to check for your home.

What AX5400 means

AX5400 is a combined figure for the two bands' maximum theoretical speeds under WiFi 6 (802.11ax). ASUS says the router reaches up to 5400 Mbps using 160MHz channels. Wider channels carry more data, but a single device will not see the total, and real speeds depend on your devices, distance, walls and interference. WiFi 6 is backwards compatible, and ASUS says it works with all your existing WiFi devices, though older devices connect at their own, lower speeds.

Processor and performance

The listing gives a 1.5 GHz tri-core processor. A router's processor handles traffic management, security scanning and features like quality of service, so a stronger one helps keep things responsive when many devices are active.

Gaming features

  • Mobile Game Mode: a tap in the ASUS Router app optimises the connection to minimise lag and latency for mobile games.
  • Dedicated gaming port: one of the four LAN ports automatically prioritises whichever wired device is plugged into it.
  • Device priority: you can also prioritise devices wirelessly through the online control panel, and use the app to manage traffic, diagnostics and guest WiFi.
  • Aura RGB lighting: several effects, which you can customise to match modes.

Prioritisation helps most when a connection is busy. If your internet connection itself is slow, it can only do so much.

Security: AiProtection Pro and Instant Guard

ASUS includes AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro, with lifetime free access as stated in the listing. It describes WPA3, the current WiFi security protocol, and advanced parental controls. Instant Guard gives a one-click shareable secure VPN for when you are away from home. A VPN encrypts your traffic between your device and your home network. Follow the manual's setup advice and keep the firmware up to date.

AiMesh

AiMesh lets you combine the RT-AX82U with other AiMesh-compatible ASUS routers into one mesh network, which ASUS says eliminates dead zones and gives seamless roaming. This is useful if one router can't cover a larger home.

Size and power

The router measures about 10.9 x 7.2 x 6.5 inches (28 x 18 x 17 cm) and weighs about 1.6 lb (0.7 kg). It accepts 100-240V, so it works with mains power in many countries with a suitable plug adapter.

Who it suits

It suits households that want a WiFi 6 upgrade with gaming-focused controls, security tools and the option to grow into a mesh. It also suits people who like visible RGB lighting. Homes with a multi-gigabit internet plan may want a router with faster wired ports, and the listing does not describe any.

What to check before you buy

  • Internet connection: check your modem and plan, and the router's WAN port speed in the manual.
  • Devices: WiFi 6 devices gain the most.
  • Coverage: think about your home's size and layout, and whether you will need a second AiMesh unit.
  • Lighting: check that the RGB lighting can be dimmed or turned off if you want.
  • App and accounts: check what the ASUS Router app requires.
  • Placement: choose a central, open spot.
