The ASUS RT-AX68U is a dual-band WiFi 6 (802.11ax) router for the home. It takes the wired connection from a modem and turns it into a wireless network for phones, laptops, consoles and smart devices. ASUS pairs the faster wireless standard with built-in network protection, parental controls and the option to grow into a mesh system.
What WiFi 6 and "up to 2700 Mbps" mean
WiFi 6 is the common name for 802.11ax, the generation after WiFi 5. Its main gain is not just a higher peak speed but better handling of many devices at once. ASUS quotes speeds up to 2700 Mbps for the RT-AX68U. That figure is the combined theoretical maximum across both bands, and real-world speeds are typically lower. They depend on distance, walls, interference and what your devices support.
The router is dual band, meaning it broadcasts on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band usually reaches further but runs slower. The 5 GHz band is faster over shorter distances.
MU-MIMO, OFDMA and 3x3 support
The listing names three technologies behind the speed:
- MU-MIMO lets the router talk to several devices at the same time instead of taking turns.
- OFDMA splits a wireless channel into smaller slots so many small transmissions, such as smart-home sensors, can share it efficiently.
- 3x3 support refers to three transmit and three receive streams, which can raise throughput for devices that have matching antennas.
Your devices need to support WiFi 6 to get the full benefit. Older WiFi 5 or WiFi 4 devices still connect, but they won't see the same gains.
Security: AiProtection Pro and WPA3
ASUS says the RT-AX68U includes lifetime AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro, described as commercial-grade network security for the home. It also supports WPA3, the newer wireless encryption standard. WPA3 only applies to devices that support it, so mixed networks may fall back to WPA2 for older gear.
Instant Guard is a one-click feature that ASUS says gives secure internet access through the router from anywhere in the world. In practice, that means connecting back to your home network while you're away.
Parental controls
Parental Control lets you set different internet access rules for different age groups. ASUS describes this as giving children the access they need while you manage the rest. Controls like these generally work per device, so you assign each child's devices to a profile.
Growing the network with AiMesh
AiMesh lets compatible ASUS routers join together into one whole-home network with a single network name. You can begin with one router and add another compatible unit later if a distant room has a weak signal. Check ASUS's AiMesh compatibility list before buying a second router.
Size and placement
The router measures 7.3 x 2.7 x 10.2 inches (about 18.5 x 6.9 x 26 cm) and weighs 1.4 lb (about 0.64 kg). It's designed to stand upright. Placing a router high and near the middle of the home generally gives the best coverage.
Who it suits
It suits homes with many connected devices, households that want built-in security and parental controls, and anyone planning a mesh network built from ASUS routers.
What to check before you buy
- Your internet connection: a router needs a modem or other internet source. Confirm the router's WAN connection suits your service.
- Your devices: check which support WiFi 6 and WPA3.
- Coverage: consider the size of your home and how many walls the signal crosses.
- Mesh plans: if you want AiMesh, confirm the other routers are on ASUS's compatible list.
- Ethernet needs: check the number and speed of wired ports against what you plan to plug in.
- Setup and updates: follow the manual for setup and keep the firmware up to date.
The short version
- A dual-band WiFi 6 (802.11ax) router with speeds quoted up to 2700 Mbps.
- MU-MIMO, OFDMA and 3x3 support for handling many devices.
- AiProtection Pro, WPA3 and Instant Guard for security and remote access.
- Parental Control with settings for different age groups.
- AiMesh support for building a whole-home mesh with compatible ASUS routers.
