The ASUS RT-AX57 is a dual-band WiFi 6 router, labelled AX3000, that aims at homes with a growing number of streaming, gaming and smart devices. It is a compact unit that replaces an older router and brings the 802.11ax standard along with ASUS's security and mesh features. Here is what the numbers mean and where the limits are.
What AX3000 means
ASUS gives the total networking speed as about 3000 Mbps: 574 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band and 2402 Mbps on the 5 GHz band. That's the combined theoretical maximum across two bands. No single device reaches that figure, and ASUS's own disclaimer states that real throughput and coverage vary with network traffic, building materials and construction. Your internet plan's speed is usually the more important ceiling.
WiFi 6, 1024-QAM and 160 MHz channels
The RT-AX57 supports 802.11ax (WiFi 6), which ASUS says improves efficiency and throughput. It also uses 1024-QAM, a modulation method that packs more data into each radio signal than the older 256-QAM, when the signal is strong. It supports 160 MHz channel width, which doubles the channel size of the common 80 MHz setup. ASUS says this gives up to four times the network capacity. Wide channels need compatible devices and a clear radio environment to be useful.
MU-MIMO and OFDMA
These two techniques are the reason WiFi 6 handles crowded networks well:
- MU-MIMO lets the router talk to several devices at once instead of one at a time.
- OFDMA splits a channel into smaller slots so many small transmissions, such as smart-home sensors, can share it efficiently.
ASUS adds that more efficient scheduling can extend the battery life of IoT gadgets and reduce congestion. Both techniques work best when your devices also support WiFi 6.
Security and remote access
AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro, is built in and ASUS describes it as commercial-grade protection for the home network. ASUS Instant Guard offers a one-click secure VPN for when you are away from home. A parental controls feature is also named in the listing. Check which settings and subscription terms apply in the manual or on ASUS's site.
Growing the network with AiMesh
The router is AiMesh-compatible: adding another AiMesh-capable ASUS router lets you build a mesh with seamless roaming. That can help in larger or multi-storey homes where one router leaves weak spots.
Size and placement
It measures about 9.1 x 5.3 x 2.2 inches (23 x 13.5 x 5.6 cm) and weighs about 0.8 lb (around 360 g). Placement matters more than any spec: a central, raised position away from thick walls and other electronics typically gives the best coverage.
Who it suits
It suits apartments and mid-sized homes with a mix of phones, laptops, streaming boxes and smart-home devices, particularly for anyone moving up from an older WiFi 5 router.
What to check before you buy
- Your internet speed: a router can't exceed your plan's speed.
- Ports: the listing calls it a gigabit router, so check the number of ports and whether your wired setup is covered.
- Device support: older devices still connect, but WiFi 6 gains need WiFi 6 clients.
- Coverage: check the size and layout of your home, and consider AiMesh for large spaces.
- Modem: confirm that it works with your modem or service type.
- Features: check which security and parental control features need further setup.
The short version
- A dual-band WiFi 6 router, model RT-AX57, rated AX3000.
- 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz, with 160 MHz support.
- MU-MIMO and OFDMA for crowded networks.
- AiProtection Classic, Instant Guard VPN and parental controls.
- AiMesh-compatible for future expansion.
