The ASUS RT-AX55 is a dual-band WiFi 6 router in the AX1800 class. It replaces an older router in a home with several phones, laptops and streaming devices competing for the same connection. ASUS positions it for homes and apartments where the aim is steadier wireless performance and a few basic security tools.
What AX1800 means
The "AX" refers to WiFi 6, also known as 802.11ax. The 1800 is a combined figure: ASUS lists 574 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band and 1201 Mbps on the 5 GHz band. These are theoretical maximums added together, not a speed you will get on one device. A single device uses one band at a time, and real speeds depend on distance, walls, interference and the device's own wireless hardware.
The 5 GHz band is typically faster but covers a shorter range, while 2.4 GHz reaches further and handles walls better but is slower and more crowded.
Capacity: MU-MIMO and OFDMA
The router supports 80 MHz channels and 1024-QAM, a denser way of packing data into each signal, which is where much of the speed gain over earlier WiFi comes from.
Two features aim at busy networks. MU-MIMO lets the router communicate with several devices at once instead of one after another. OFDMA divides a channel into smaller slices so that many small transmissions, such as smart-home sensors or messages, can share it efficiently. Both help most when your devices also support WiFi 6, so older devices will connect but see less benefit.
Processor, range and ports
ASUS lists a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor and a maximum coverage of 3,000 sq ft. Coverage claims depend heavily on building materials and layout. The router has four Gigabit LAN ports for wired connections, which suit a desktop PC, a games console or a network storage drive, since a cable usually gives the steadiest link.
Security tools
ASUS includes AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro, as network-level protection for connected devices, described by ASUS as lifetime. ASUS Instant Guard offers a one-click VPN for when you are away from home. Whatever the router offers, it is sensible to set a strong admin password and keep the firmware up to date.
Mesh and parental controls
The router is compatible with ASUS AiMesh. That allows you to add other AiMesh-compatible ASUS routers later to form one whole-home network with a single name, which can help if a single unit does not reach every room. Parental controls are included for managing access on children's devices.
Size and power
It measures about 9.1 x 5.3 x 2.2 inches and weighs roughly 0.8 lb. The power supply is listed as accepting 100 to 240 V, so it can be used with mains standards in different regions, subject to the correct plug.
Who it suits
It suits small to medium homes and apartments with a mix of modern and older devices, and people who want WiFi 6 with wired ports and simple security tools. Larger homes may want to plan for mesh from the beginning.
What to check before you buy
- Your internet plan: the router can only pass on the speed your provider delivers, and the Gigabit ports cap wired speeds at about 1 Gbps.
- Modem: this is a router, so check whether you need a separate modem and how it connects.
- Device support: WiFi 6 benefits show up only on WiFi 6 devices.
- Coverage: consider the size and layout of your home, and whether AiMesh would be needed.
- Setup: check the manual for the app or web interface and for firmware updates.
The short version
- A dual-band AX1800 WiFi 6 router: 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz.
- MU-MIMO, OFDMA, 80 MHz channels and 1024-QAM for busier networks.
- 1.5 GHz quad-core processor and four Gigabit LAN ports.
- AiProtection Classic, Instant Guard VPN and parental controls.
- AiMesh compatible, with 100-240 V power input.
